Thetis still wasn't precisely certain as to how he did it, but some how that old barnacle beard, Pontos, had convinced her to join his staff at Half-Blood Academy, at least for a term. She supposed that it had something to do with the deep distress that seemed to permeate from the ancient deity as he explained to her that Lord Zeus had recalled all "major gods" to Olympus, or their respective realms, leaving them unavailable to teach at the Academy. She couldn't remember a time when he had looked so old, so tired, and so..., well there wasn't an exact word that described him these days, but she supposed thin and faint was about as close as she would get. Almost as though he were fading away before her eyes, which of course was preposterous, gods only faded away when they were forgotten and their power was gone. Admitedly, Pontos' power wasn't what it had been, but he still had a lion's share that was for sure.
She pursed her lips primly as she settled on her pearly throne at the head table in the Great Hall, taking in the students who would be attending the Summer Term. A good number were younger students as Camp Half-Blood no longer had the space, nor resources to accommodate all of the demigods that flowed across its magical boarders every day. Then there were the demititans, half-monsters and half-mythologicals who really had no where else to go. There were still a fair number missing who had gone off on a quest, the Fates only knowing what they would find. The thought brought a slight pain to Thetis' heart as she remembered her own son, Achilles, dashing off in search of glory, in some ways Achilles was more powerful than even Pontos, many more people knew and remembered his name. Which to a grieving mother was a small consolation if that.
Her musings interrupted as Pontos stood to his feet greeting the massed students at their tables.
"Welcome to Half-Blood Academy Summer Term," he began in a kind but firm voice that commanded respect and authority.
"To our new students we bid you welcome, and to our returning student we bid you welcome back.
"As you can no doubt tell, Summer Term is a bit different that your usual school term. In some ways it is much less, shall we say strict, in others it is much more strenuous and difficult. During this term our focus shall be upon combat and defensive training, as well as training you to be able to harness your natural abilities and channel them in ways to benefit all of man kind...where possible," there was a slight twinkle in the old gods eyes as he allowed the massed students to murmur amongst themselves for a moment.
"Now," The room fell silent again. "Many of you may be aware that a number of student embarked upon a quest at the end of last term, and I know you all will join me in asking the gods' protection and mercies to our brave heroes as they seek to find and bring back, which will, I dare say, prove to be of immense value to men and gods alike.
"Along with our valiant questers, you may notice a number of changes in our teaching staff. This is nothing to worry or concern you. Young gods have duties aside from moldy young minds, and that should not be seen as an sort of ill omen or anything. The Academy is just as well protected now, as it has been before, and all of the staff are pledged to protect the school to the best of their abilities, come what may.
"I am pleased to announce that we will be bringing back chariot racing and capture the flag, more information will be posted in your House's common rooms when the time approaches. But for now, let us all enjoy this wonderful feast we have before us, and get to know one another outside of the competitive school environment. Enjoy,"
Pontos sat back down next to Thetis as satyr and nymphs clad in Royal Blue robes circulated around the room depositing enormous platters of food throughout the hall. she was caught off guard when Pontos leaned over to her whispering.
"Thank you for doing this Thetis. I am extremely grateful for your assistance. I truly wish I weren't placed in the awkward position I find myself in, but I know that you will be more than capable of, what is it they say, 'holding down the fort' in my place."
"Not at all Headmaster. I understand fully well the terrible position you have been stuck in. You have sworn upon the River Styx to teach and protect these students, but you are also sworn never to act against her. But you must know Headmaster, that this will not be a permanent arrangement. I will assist you during this term, as I have promised, but after that remains to be seen."
Pontos nodded offering a sad smile as he straightened in his seat, weary eyes cast upon the mass of young lives, which were in his hands. In her hands as well, for that matter. She took a sip of Nectar watching as the student mingled, chatting, laughing and even a few cases arguing together, she could see how a place like this could grow upon a person, not that she would ever admit such things to Pontos. It was going to be an interesting Summer, that much was for sure.

Fagan sat at the Apollo table; banging out poly-rhythms on the table, one of her brothers spitting out lyrics. She probably should be with her sisters at Artemis' table, but they just got so boring sometimes. She'd go back when it was important; right now she was just hanging out. It was nice to be with people who appreciated the simple complicity of a quadruple sub-division; a bunch of super-human band geeks.
Hey, cut it, one of the girls said.
Fagan looked over to see Pontos getting ready to speak. She stopped in mid-rhythm, and turned her attention to the headmaster. Fagan faded out after the first couple sentences the ancient god spoke. She knew what the summer would be about; what more was there to hear?
Her feet picked up the beat her hands had dropped. New staff, the students will be safe, we ask for blessings to be granted to those out on quests, blah, blah: all the good stuff. Summer was my time to shine; Summer belonged to the children of Apollo. Nothing but sunny days. Of course, she'd probably be under the moon just as much as the sun this summer. Which brought up the question of when she'd be sleeping..
In Fagan's musings over her future sleeping patterns, her eyes drifted to the woman in the seat next to where Pontos had been sitting. She radiated the same ancient power that flowed off of Pontos. She was older, but she was still beautiful. For a moment, she thought she could smell the sea.
Who's the woman up there?
she asked. Everyone shrugged, listening to Pontos finish up his speech. He sat down next to the woman again, they began speaking quietly. There was a soft shove from her right, and her brother told her to start up her beat again. Fagan returned her attention to her table drum and picked up right where she'd left off. But her eyes kept drifting back to the woman at the front of the room. [/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

After all this time, she back in school once again, and she did not like it one bit. Emily had tried to convince Lady Artemis that sending her on this mission was a bad idea, but the goddess wouldn't have it. "You are one of my huntresses, and my sister, there is no one else that can do this. Now please Emily, do as I ask," Artemis had said in a tone as firm as stone. Emily, of course relented and conceded that it would be her who would go to Half-Blood Academy for the Summer term. Although, Emily had a sneaking suspicion that she would not in fact be there for the whole term. That was the only light at the end of the tunnel as far as this venture was concerned. She hated the idea of being back at the Academy with a bunch of immature boys no less. Sure there were girls, even a few of her sister huntresses had been granted permission to attend for a time, but it wasn't the same as being on the Hunt with Artemis herself. "Name?" croaked a wizened old satyr with cob webs dangling from his horns. "Emily Alexander--" "Daughter of Zeus, Welcome to the Academy, please take a seat--" "I am a Huntress of the Lady Artemis, First and Foremost," she shot back acidly, leaving the satyr quite taken aback as she brushed past him, her silvery dress flowing like water around her. "Daughter of Zeus, daughter of Zeus?! Is that all these idiots see me as?! As if I would ever claim him as my father. As far as I am concerned I have no father," Emily thought scathingly as she settled at a table by herself, scanning the room with a practiced eye, her expression colder and more disapproving every moment. There were boys every where! Flirting and chatting with innocent little girls, it was outrageous! Even some of sister huntresses were seated at tables with boys. She would have a harsh word with them when she returned to Artemis House this evening, there was a code of conduct a Huntress must abide by, and by the gods she would see to it that it was enforced. "Welcome child. I know what it is you think, but do not judge too harshly. Soon you will find yourself in a dire situation, and you will have no choice but to accept the help of someone you thought was lost forever, and he will be the bridge that will save us all," the voices was quiet and faint, like a breeze across her ear, she looked around to see the image, of what looked like an elderly grandmother sitting across the table from her. Emily's eyes widened in confusion, the only people who looked like that were gods and goddesses, but surely she was imagining things? She blinked rapidly trying to focus, only to find the old woman was no longer there, leaving Emily with a black void of foreboding that threatened to swallow her whole. "Don't you look like you've just swallowed a plate of satyr sh*t?" came an Australian voice from a strikingly handsome boy, with an easy relaxed air about him. "Indeed. Fortunately, Titan. Your presence is neither required, nor desired." She turned in her seat literally giving the boy a cold shoulder, feeling the slightest hint of satisfaction in it. She was also extremely pleased with herself in being able to pick out the demititans from her own demigods, that would make them much easier to avoid in the future. "As you wish Ice Princess," she shot him a wintery glare before recrossing her arms and legs as she glared at the rest of the Great Hall. Walking down the hallway that lead to the Great Hall, Brizo couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. How could she not be nervous? Firstly, she was late, that was pretty bad. Secondly, she had never really taught a class before. Would the students like her? Brizo hoped so. Pontos had hired her for a reason, yes? She was to teach students, demigods, how to survive at sea against all the monsters. It made sense, her job was to protect sailors at sea, was it not? Nothing in her dreams had told her that any bad could come out of it.
Stopping in front of the door that lead to the inside of the Great Hall, she took a deep breath, before opening the door and walking in, just as Pontos had finished his speech. Thetis was here. Walking along the back of the hall, she weaved her way through the tables, as if she were a fish, weaving its way through coral and rocks. Her hazel eyes dared not look at the students. She would see them, soon enough.
Unlike many sea gods, who were quite untamable, Brizo was calm, collected. She should’ve been nervous, walking up to Pontos, but she was not. Walking over to where the two headmasters were, she bowed her head, looking at them with her eyes, and said, “I am sorry for being late, I was helping someone out at sea. We can’t let every human drown, and, well…” Brizo could not think of anything else to say about the subject. Talking wasn’t her strongest suit, due to her not interacting with the other gods, well, people in general, as much as the others.
She never really saw herself above other gods, or anything. Yes, she saw things in her dreams enough to be considered an oracle for those at sea, but that made her no different from the other minor sea deities. Brizo did not break her gaze away from the headmasters. That would be disrespectful, plus it would mean she was afraid of them. Why would she be afraid of them? They had done nothing to her to make her scared of them.
Absentmindedly, she began to play with her long, brown hair, twisting it between her fingers, and occasionally braiding it at certain parts.
But, soon enough, her mind began to betray her. Curiosity built up inside her, wanting to see what students there were. Brizo quickly glanced at the students and then back to Pontos and Thetis, hoping the small glance would be enough to suffice, until she heard more from the two. Certainly, they would have something to say about the matter.
Brizo’s fingers left her hair, and her arms lowered to her sides. Fidgeting a bit, she felt like a child, waiting for punishment. It was always a bit nerve racking, standing in front of a deity a higher ranking, and older then you. Yet Brizo let no fear come to her. Other minor gods could feel fear when dealing with those of the higher ranking, but not her. Plenty of times, she would question why they were to be afraid of those who held thrones in Olympus. Sometimes she’d even question why they were to be afraid of titans, also.
If someone stripped them of their ranking, they’d be the same as any minor god. Of course, Brizo wasn’t against the titles, but she could see past them. Her eyes betrayed her as she looked over at the students with them. Some she could tell were the sons and daughters of water gods and the like, others she could see were part monster. Some were sons and daughters of Titans too, she noted. Her eyes snapped back to Pontos and Thetis quickly, then looked down at her feet, then back at the headmasters.
In reality, Brizo was more nervous about teaching, than the headmasters being mad at her. Would she be a good teacher? She was a more of a goddess who lived in solitude, save for when she needed to save mariners, or take an offering, so would she be able to interact with her students and not be at all awkward? It would be a challenge, yes, but a challenge she would willing accept. She had been chosen, not another sea god, to teach this class, and by gods she wasn’t going to turn it down. No, Brizo was not too low to decline or too high to not even think twice about saying no.
Besides, teaching could be interesting. Brizo didn’t know many demigods in person, but she certainly had come to a few in their dreams to help them. Of course, that was entirely different, but at least she hadn’t ignored demigods entirely. They just didn’t interest her. Nor did it interest her in having any demigod children, anyway. What was the point, if one could not interact with their demigod children without breaking the rules, somehow? Sure, they were allowed to indirectly help them, but with her… that would be hard, since she did give answers to people in their dreams, and that was how many gods communicated with their children already, so that would cause problems.
She’d stick with teaching, for now.
Once again, her eyes betrayed her, one more time, to look out at the students. They all were different. So very different. Some seemed very wild, yet some seemed calm. Some were harsh, yet some were gentle. All so very different, yet the same at the same time. And some of them! Romans! She certainly had not any Romans in her time, due to how much they didn’t interact with mortals, but had heard they were quite the strategists. Certainly it would be quite interesting to have them in her class, to see how well they’d do. If they were still strategic now, at least.
Her course wouldn’t be hard, but it would take some thinking. Survival was more than just instinct sometimes. It took trust, and knowledge of your surroundings. Plus other skills that different demigods had because of their parentage. Hopefully, all these demigods could get along enough to pay attention to her class, certain Artemis’s hunters would pay attention. They spent more time on land than at sea, she noted. Now, the children of Zeus… they’d cause some problems, most likely.
Either way, she was going to teach, even if Pontos and Thetis were mad at her for being late or not. Word Count: 1076 Muse: Awesome Notes: Because there aren't enough awkward gods out there.

It was that time again in Half-Blood Academy, that time for Summer Term where usually most students would be going home to spend time with their families. For some though, they would stay behind for them to be able to possibly learn more from the classes offered only during the summer. It was just an assumption, but maybe most of the students who stayed were the ones who didn’t really get along with their families. The ones whose families are still in shock and have not yet accepted the fact that their daughter or son was half Olympian, well in the case of Half-Blood Academy the students weren’t just half-Greek God, there were also Roman Demi-Gods and almost shockingly Demi-Titans and Half-Monsters. Their mortal parent might be more accepting of their Half-Blood children but the problem really lies with the relatives that come after their mortal parent’s affair with a divine being, like stepmothers/fathers and stepsiblings.
That wasn’t exactly the case for the gentle and kind Chloe though, her stepmother Heather and her stepbrother Brian had no problem with her whatsoever and she didn’t have any problem with them. They all got along fine at home, of course the occasional small sister and brother bickering between her and her 12-year-old brother. But they were just small things that could be fixed quite easily, usually they were just about how Brian doesn’t watch his step when he walks around the garden and accidentally steps on the plants Chloe grows herself. But if everything was quite peaceful back at her house with her father, stepmother and stepbrother, why was she still in school taking up summer classes? While she was sitting around the Demeter Residence tending to some sweet potatoes growing on that small patch of garden placed conveniently in the residence for the children of Demeter to grow anything they want, she was tending the garden rather absentmindedly, not taking her mind off the fact that she could be at home by now.
Well, Chloe actually knew why she was still here in Half-Blood Academy for Summer Term; her father was the one who had asked her to stay a little longer. They say Summer Term was more about building up the physical aspects of the students, more on training for combat, and fighting was something Chloe didn’t really enjoy much. It was a fact that this daughter of Demeter was known to shun herself away from anything that involved her having to hit people, even if it was so she could learn how to fight and defend herself from real combat. That was the reason why her father had asked her to stay behind, so she could disregard that passive attitude for fighting and fully accept the fact that it was how the Half-Bloods lived, in order for them to survive whatever came at them. And Chloe, always being daddy’s little girl, couldn’t say no to his pleading eyes, she had to understand that he did this for her own good even if she didn’t like it very much.
As she let out a sigh she looked up and actually tore away her gaze from the sweet potatoes, it was just now that she realized she was the only one in the Demeter Residence, all her half-siblings had somehow magically disappeared. She wondered for a split second where they went and then she remembered, with her brown eyes growing wide with shock, that today was the Summer Term gathering at the Great Hall. As quickly as she can she got up and dashed out of the Demeter Residence and towards the direction of the Great Hall, the other places she passed by were currently empty, which didn’t assure her much in her hoping that it hasn’t started yet. She was out of breath when she reached the outside of the big doors leading to the Great Hall, in front of a satyr who raised an eyebrow at her. Chloe gave a small, polite smile and held her hand up to signal that she was still trying to catch her breath.
When she felt like she could finally breathe she stood up straight and fixed her currently messy blonde hair, her cheeks were still pink and sweat was still running down from her pores but she tried to look as presentable as possible. “Chloe Guthrie.” she told the satyr, who still gave her a strange look before looking down at his list. “Daughter of Demeter, proceed.” he said, waving a hand towards the big door, signaling for her to go ahead inside. Chloe nodded and fixed herself up a little bit more before stepping into the Great Hall, against what she was hoping the event had already started and Pontos was already in the middle of his speech. She felt uncomfortable as she made her way towards the table where her half-siblings were, silently and swiftly so she hopefully wouldn’t be noticed and wouldn’t be disrupting the speech.
She took the nearest seat available which was at the far end of the table, next to one of her half-brothers who apparently noticed her joining the other children of Demeter. “Hey Chloe, uhm… sorry about us kinda leaving you behind at the Residence… we tried to get your attention but you wouldn’t really pay attention and—“he started but Chloe cut him off with a tired but forgiving smile. “It’s all right; it’s partly my fault anyway why I seem so… distracted. I’m here now, aren’t I?” she said, receiving a return smile from her half-brother, who nodded and turned back to Pontos’ speech. Chloe took a deep breath and looked towards the head table where Pontos was near the end of his speech, and she noticed some new faces, who were probably going to be new teachers at this academy for Summer Term. When Pontos was finished and took a seat she propped an elbow on the table and leaned her head on it, sighing deeply again and wondering how she was going to do this summer.
