Personality: Phobos, the child of Ares and Aphrodite, is his immortal father and Roland has inherited quite a bit of Phobos's personality. He is basically what you'll get if the Cheshire Cat decided that it wanted to be a demi god and walk on two legs. He fits the description of odd, quirky and wild rather nicely and he doesn't look like he'll be turning a new leaf anytime soon. And since we're looking at words to describe Roland, we might as well through mean and manipulative into the mix too. Roland is not a nice boy, but unlike the bulk of unpleasant people he does not go out of his way to be abrasive or abusive to people at least to their faces. Instead, Roland prefers to befriend people and then stab them in the back.
Even though he likes the wild things in life, Roland is hardly one to run around campus shouting his lungs off or anything hyperactive like that. He acts just the opposite and comes across as languid and laid back. This hides the manipulative side of his personality very well and most people don't realize that he's not a nice fellow until it already too late. Sinister in his own quiet way, it seems that Roland doesn't find his day complete if he doesn't get someone into trouble.
However, this isn't to say that Roland is completely isolated and without friends. He gravitates toward demi gods with the same type of personality that he has. These are usually the wild ones, with a taste for chaos and who are not afraid to bend the rules until they break. Friends of Roland will get a taste of his rather cynical sense of humor and oddly enough his cooking. Roland is a good cook and more often then not he uses his friends as lab rats for new recipes. History:In her youth, Ashley-Lynn Prescott was an overachiever. She was a straight A student, captain of her track and field team and helped out at the local soup kitchen. She was perhaps, a little too smug about her achievements and was so smug that she would often rub people the wrong way. You see, aside from being smug, Ashley-Lynn was also self righteous and prudish and when she met Phobos, these were the qualities that caught his eye. Phobos did not find her attractive though, he wanted to show her that there was truth in the old saying, that pride always goes before the fall.
They met at a local carnival. Not surprisingly, Phobos was posing as a carny manning the House of Horrors. At first Ashley-Lynn did not even look at him twice but her pursued her throughout her visit to the carnival and she found this very flattering. Ashley-Lynn was the type of girl who liked to be chased and was a sucker for flattery. It was a good thing that Phobos had seen this type of girl before and he played Ashley-Lynn as easily as Apollo played one of his lyres. He got her coming back for more and before the carnival packed up and dove out of town, Phobos also got her pregnant.
Teen pregnancy shattered Ashley-Lynn's all American, good girl image. Her popularity plummeted and she was made fun of. Even though she wanted to, her parents didn't let her go through with an abortion. She ended up dropping out of school and though she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Ashley-Lynn despised him on sight. She blamed Roland for destroying her life and basically left it up to her parents to look after the boy. In return, Roland grew up resenting his mother for never being there for him. He would wonder why she was so distant and he would wonder who his father was though any questions Roland had was met with a wall of silence from both his grandparents and by his mother.
When he turned twelve, Roland's mother announced that they would be going on a field trip. While this surprised him, Roland was glad to go along. His mother never took him anywhere and he was happy that he would be getting out of their drab little town. Little did he know, Phobos had visited Ashely-Lynn again the night before. It was a short visit but he told her who he was and basically told her to send Roland to Half Blood Academy. Ashley-Lynn intended to do just that, she also planned on leaving Roland there intent on washing her hands of him as soon as she dropped him off.
They were close to campus when they were attacked by a huge flock of Stymphilian birds. The attack caused Ashley-Lynn to drive into a tree and the crash proved fatal for her. Roland was left to fend for himself but luckily for him the commotion caused a pair of satyrs to come to his aid. They managed to get him across the magical boundaries and into Half Blood Academy where he has been ever since. Though his grandparents have written to him and asked him to come home, Roland has refused. He prefers it at the Academy. Abilities: Being a demi god does have it's perks. When the satyr knocked on his cabin door, Roland was in a deep sleep. He had gotten in very, very late last night and had planned on not waking up until the sun was high in the sky. The first few polite taps on his door went unnoticed by him and it was only when the satyr started to pound did Roland finally start to stir. He took his time sitting up, glaring in an unfocused way at the door. Roland's foggy, sleep filled mind registered that it wasn't even dawn yet and that just irritated him to no end. Deciding that whoever it was that was knocking on his door could shove it, Roland made as if to flop back onto his bed and pull the covers over him. He never got to do so though,
"Roland Prescott?" The voice that now accompanied the banging sounded distinctly sheepish and in a very literal sense too. He could have sworn that there was a nervous bleat there at the end. "Please open the door...you're needed at the Big House. It's a quest." A quest? Roland repeated in his mind and then turned his head into his pillow and let out a groan. What had he done to piss Chiron off? Sure the old horse man got annoyed by Roland always breaking curfew and pranking the patrol harpies but to send him on a quest? That was just cruel and unusual punishment. He considered pretending that he wasn't even in the cabin but the increasingly annoying knocking continued and Roland knew that sleep was a lost cause when the person behind the door started to plead with him. How was he going to get forty winks with someone grovelling and sniveling right outside his door?
"Urgh!" Roughly he pulled his pillow out from under his head and whacked it viciously to the floor. That pointless act of violence completed, Roland got out of bed and stomped over to the door which he yanked open. The sudden motion caused a satyr to come tumbling into the cabin right at him, sending them both careening backward. 'Great.' Roland thought as he lost his balance and sat down hard on the cabin floor. 'My life is suddenly a sitcom.' His nose twitched with the odd sent of goat and tin cans and after a beat, he shoved the satyr off him. Roland wasn't wearing a shirt, he had been too tired to fully undress for bed and the jeans he was wearing looked thoroughly slept in. "Three second rule goat boy, remember that." He said snappishly before getting to his feet again. Could satyrs be gay? They were always chasing after those wood nymphs. There probably wasn't such a thing as a gay satyr because all the wood nymphs looked like girls. And what was up with that huh? Boys should be allowed to be trees too. Roland shook his head and ran a hand through his hair. Damn...on second thoughts he didn't really want an answer to that question.
Walking over to his bed, he reached down and grabbed his shirt. "You were saying something about a quest?" Roland prompted as he shook the garment out and made as if to pull it over his head. There was no way he was going to get out of going so he might as well ask for the details. The satyr only looked back at him dumbly. Maybe it was shocked that somebody wasn't bouncing off walls at the prospect of going somewhere and probably getting killed. He flashed the satyr an evil look, once which had it saying,
"I don't know any of the details, but Shay du Rone has been given a quest and she said that you're wanted at the Big House. She also said that you should come packed with essentials." At this Roland rolled his eyes. "Bossy witch." He muttered, loud enough that the satyr started to look uncomfortable at the remark. In truth, Roland didn't really have any problems with Shay. He had only spoken to her one or two times and one of those was a conversation over how he had scared one of her younger siblings with a spider filled illusion. It was so nice to have his work 'appreciated', insert sarcasm here, here and here. But she was real nice to look at, even if they really didn't get along and all that eye candy would be entertaining during this quest. "Who else?" Roland asked, pulling a backpack out from under his bed. Yanking open his drawer, he started to attempt to cram two shirts inside and another pair of jeans.
"Vesper Vane.." The satyr continued hesitantly, staring in a horrified fashion at the way Ronald was preparing for this quest. This particular satyr had been at camp for a while and had seen campers embark on quests he had never encountered such carelessness before. The expression on his face grew even more fixed when Roland snorted and said,
"Score! That one is hot stuff." He flashed the satyr a wicked grin. Well this quest was certainly looking up now. He'd be traveling to far off places with two cute girls and quests got really stressful didn't they? Maybe one or both would need comforting. "At the same time." Roland mumbled to himself and out of the corner of his eye he saw the satyr blush. Heh. Wasn't his fault that satyrs had that whole empathy thing going for them. "She's a little scary though, but I'm not the son of Phobos for nothing." He zipped up the backpack and then reached under his bed again for his sword or rather the toy spatula that would turn into a sword when needed. Not only was he the king of Fears, Phobos had a great sense of humor too.
"And Sebastian Aiden." The satyr continued and this piece of information was met with slightly less enthusiasm. Another guy? There went his hopes of being the only guy in an all girl party. This Sebastian guy wasn't someone that Roland had spoken to before. He zipped up and stuffed the toy spatula in the back pocket of his jeans. "Lead on goat boy." He said as if he didn't know where the Big House was. He didn't bother to pack drachma or anything for first aid since he knew that there were three other people he could mooch off now.
Upon reaching the Big House, the satyr showed Roland into a room and promptly left. He was looking shaken and more then a little worried and Roland thought that at least one of them was feeling that way. The only thing that was even registering on Roland's emotions radar was boredom. He waited for the rest of the quest members to appear and made himself at home.
