Personality: Most people often come away from a meeting with Riven not knowing what to make of the boy. Before you think that this is because he suffers from mood swings that could give you whiplash, it should be established that Riven is not as moody as the other children of Hades. And while we’re on that subject, he is not as brooding or as dark either. However this does not mean that Riven is going to go prancing around campus handing out flowers anytime soon and just as a word of caution to those who seek to take advantage of him; If it is one thing that Riven has inherited straight from his father, it is Hades’s strong sense of revenge. For a boy of only seventeen he clings tight to his grudges and will go out of his way to pay back those who have wronged him. Once you have invoked his anger, the terms ‘not as dark or moody or brooding’ fly right out the window and Riven will quickly prove himself to be a true child of Hades. Just like his father there are unpleasant rumors swirling about him, mostly to do with how he had hurt one student badly because of a prank that was played on him.
But cruelty and rumors aside, most of the time Riven comes off as a quiet and rather formal young man. He prefers to watch people rather then talk about or two them and has been mostly pegged as a loner by most of the students If he does have something to say though, you can be rest assured that Riven will say it and he will say it in such a way that it will be heard. He has a rather blunt way of putting things though somehow or rather will try to arrange it in a way that will not be hurtful. Hurting people in petty ways or just because he can is not a hobby that Riven likes to indulge in. Following in this line, he does not like gossip and people who participate in such things get on his nerves. The same goes for those people who are too outgoing, too loud of just generally talk too much. Riven views these people as being self involved, and too caught up in living in the moment that they don’t enjoy the moment itself.
Because of his introverted nature and many, many, many pet peeves, Riven is not one to make friends easily. He is picky in the extreme when it comes to company and it is no surprise that the majority have come to brand him as arrogant. If you do manage to get on his very short list of friends though, you will find that Riven is more tolerant to those that he holds dear to him. And of course you have made a friend for life as he would give up just about anything to protect you and yours.
History: Born in Paris, France, Mona Dupont was something of a child prodigy. Her forte was mathematics, and as a tween would astound older relatives with her ability to solve complex problems in the field. Her future was indeed bright and shining, and she fulfilled the promise of her youth by getting into a prestigious university before moving on to become a professor in Mathematics herself. Though she had quite a reputation, this was not the way that his caught Hades’s attention. No, she caught his eye through a hobby of hers. In her spare time Mona Dupont would moonlight as a graveyard tour guide. She wasn’t a dark and morbid woman and was certainly very far from being a closeted wannabe Goth; instead it was the history of those graveyards which drew her. She wasn’t so much as interested as the bones in the ground as she was with the quiet peace and interesting ecosystems that flourished inside aged graveyards. She was so passionate about this part time job that a lot of people would go out of their way to join in the tour groups that she was leading, and that was how she met Hades.
Interestingly enough, Mona was often caught up in her job that she didn’t notice him right away. It was only when she came into work one night and found that he was the only one who would be joining in the nightly tour that she did properly take notice. He introduced himself with his real name, which only made Mona amused, though as the wandered through the graveyards and talked she sensed that there was something very, very different about him. Another thing that was undeniable was the attraction that they felt for each other. An affair ensued, however she only had him for one winter and when the springtime came, he disappeared.
Though he did not leave Mona empty handed, and a month later she realized that she was pregnant. Her first instinct was to get an abortion. Mona was one of those practical and modern thinking women and knew that an unplanned baby would only hold up her career. At this point her mother, Clemence, stepped in, and plainly said that she should not punish the baby just because his father left her. This unspoken challenge changed her mind and Mona went through with the pregnancy. She a healthy baby boy nine months later and with the help of her parents, raised him. Not that she needed the extra help, Riven was a manageable baby, and there were even times when he could get eerily quiet. Looking into his dark eyes, Mona would often be reminded of her lost lover.
Growing up that quietness did not leave Riven in the least. He spoke only when he was spoken to, or when he had something that he thought ought to be said. For a young boy he had a force of presence about him that was almost unsettling. In the end he would end up driving away, most of his mother’s would be suitors. But one stuck, a businessman named Darius Moreau and unlike the others Riven seemed to take to him. He was only seven at that time, but seemed interested in Darius’s occupation, especially with things such as human resource and management. However, being only a child, Riven’s questions would of course be childish, mostly along the lines of, “So many people, where do you put them all?” Darius found Riven’s interest in his work endearing though, the boy never paid much attention to his own school work, and took this as Riven’s blessing to propose to Mona.
The family was set to be a happy one, though as Riven neared the age of ten, strange things started to happen. The little family unit started to feel like it was being stalked by unseen forces, or at least Darius and Mona could not see them but Riven could. The boy became distraught and even more listless, babbling about monsters that were after him. Riven’s life at school took a turn for the worst, his grades had never been good due to ADHD and dyslexia but this new anxiety bought out the worse in him. He would often start fights, not caring if it was with teachers or fellow students. It was around this time that a job opened up in the United States for Darius. Taking it as a sign the family of five, Mona had had twins since then, moved to America. They hoped that things would soon settle down, but the situation took another strange turn.
On Riven’s eleventh birthday, Hades showed up once more. This caused unbelievable drama with the adults, though eleven year old Riven was more interested in the strange man who was claiming to be his real father. The man seemed to know about the monsters and talked about a school that Riven could go to, to be with his own kind. Such talk piqued Riven’s interest and he told his mother that he would like to go. Immediately. He would not take no for an answer. Put on the spot, Mona agreed to send him to the Academy for one year only, but as they say, plans change and Riven has been going to the Academy ever since.
