Heaven loved the stables. She loved the smell of leather and hay, and once you got used to it, the manure didn't bother you all that much. This place just reminded her so much of home. She hadn't been back to Texas since she had left at fifteen. She didn't want to endanger her family if she could help it.
She missed Duchess, her mustang back in Houston. She was sure that her mother had either sold her or had given the little white mustang to her little sister, Catherine. Heaven was about Catherine's age when she learned how to ride. If Heaven wasn't at her mother's tattoo studio, Back in Black, then she was at their hundred acre ranch, riding Duchess, or helping her grandmother's ranch hands break the horses.
She was dressed a lot less flashy today in a simple black tank top, straw cowboy hat, jeans, and her black leather boots. She tapped the toe of her right boot against the floor, making sure it was on correctly, before she repeated the process with the foot.
She walked quickly and calmly down the rows of horses. There were some beautiful creatures here, she had to admit. Some of them were normal horses, but some of them had wings. None of them, though, caught her fancy. Until she reached the last stall that is.
She had carried a heavy leather saddle, bridle and bit, and a set of reigns. She slung the saddle down on the stall door and opened it. "Hey there boy. How ya doin'?"
Inside the stall was a large black stallion, his wings the color of a raven. He snorted loudly at the girl and pawed the ground, bumping against her with his head. Heaven laughed and patted him between the ears. "Woah there, Khan. I'll get you saddled up soon."
She picked up a brush, from it's place right outside of the stall door, and quickly began to brush Khan down, humming under her breath as she did so. Once she finished brushing him she lifted his hoofs and picked them clean, using the red handled hoof pick that had been sticking out of her back pocket.
She turned around, after placing the saddle blanket down on his back, and hefted the saddle off of the door and deposited on the big horse. He grunted slightly before he nipped at the girl's braid. His nose was gently swatted for his efforts.
The pegasus, Sher Khan, was one of the only horses that Heaven would ride at school. He wasn't wild, but he wasn't an easy going horse either. You had to keep a watchful eye on him. He was full of tricks.
Heaven bent to tighten the girth and grinned. Khan had suddenly become bigger around the middle. She gently slapped him on the stomach," All right you, let the breath out. You're not fooling me any."
The horse let out a big breath, flipping his head up and down in a horsey laugh. If the girl hadn't caught that, then she would have fallen off as soon as she had gotten on his back.
On went the rest of the tack in a peaceful manner. Khan didn't try any more tricks, and Heaven was grateful for that. He was such a big horse it was hard to control him sometimes.
"Come on now, Khan. Let's go." With a soft click of her tongue she lead the black stallion out of his stall and lead him outside to find the mounting block. She was too short to mount the monster pegasus on her own.
She let out a loud exclamation of shock and almost didn't catch herself when Khan nudged her sharply in the back. She turned and glared at the horse, a no nonsense look coming across her face as she scolded the Pegasus. "Knock that sh*t off Khan, I'm not playing that game with you. Over grown bird brain," she mumbled to herself as she jerked the huge horse along. "You would think that someone would have gone through the trouble of teaching you some manners," she grumbled under her breath.
