Never in all of Jordin’s life had she ever had a stalker, and her stalker came in the form of a fourteen year old blonde girl who apparently was the daughter of Dionysus. ‘Well that explains it she’s crazy!’ Jordin thought frantically in her mind though her body faked a calm state as she walked to the dining pavilion. Hopefully this way her she could somewhat separate herself from this girl by a few tables in the very least. That is unless she began to follow Jordin to her own table, not to say it wasn’t allowed but still it was an unusual thing.
Jordin had entered with a group of students though none of them had been her siblings or really her friends either. Immediately she went to her table knowing that hopefully she had lost sight of her during the crowd. It wasn’t that Jordin was scared of the girl; she was a bit perplexed was all. Even for a Half-blood the girl seemed….different. For one whenever Jordin saw her she was always smiling. Not that it was a bad thing, but all the time she was smiling even when Jordin asked other students about her just by her description they all immediately knew who she was describing.
It was through that way that Jordin had found out that the girl was a daughter of Dionysus. Her name though was still a mystery. Actually now that Jordin thought over her situation she couldn’t help but wonder what was she so afraid of? Perhaps this was one huge coincidence or the girl had noticed that Jordin was the new student and was trying to befriend her despite the age gap. Jordin decided to approach her, the girl was alone at the Dionysus table her siblings probably not having arrived yet. Jordin took the seat across from her.
“Uh hi…I’m Jordin Wayne um….and I was wondering why are you following me around I mean…can I help you with something?” She asked a bit awkwardly, but Jordin wanted to get to the bottom of why the girl was following her around.

The truth as to why Hatter was following this girl? She was lonely and wanted a friend. She also thought the girl was fairly pretty. It had been a fairly random decision as most of her decisions were. It had started by just standing near her, not saying a word. Hatter could do that for hours on end. When the girl started trying to evade her, Hatter was polite enough to allow a few yards of free space. It never occurred to Hatter that the girl wanted a bit more. Or that her perpetual smile could be putting her off, much less her appearance. On this particular day Hatter was wearing shoes that not only didn’t match, but had different sized heels. She thought this gave her a nice funny walk. She wore a poison purple tube top over a tighter thin blouse the color of seafoam. She wore skinny jeans which actually had the words “Skinny” and “Jeans” written on the legs under an oddly fluffy orange skirt. She wore perfectly applied, if oddly colored, rouge and lipstick. Her long blonde hair was fairly normal pulled back in a pony-tail. She wore no eye-shadow or mascara. Something that might strike anyone familiar with fashion was that while none of this matched and seemed to be put on by a mad person, all of it was in excellent condition. She knew how to care for her possessions, but apparently didn’t hold any truck with concepts like “color coordination” or “Matching”. The lack of make up around her eyes was a conscious and very sane effort to protect others. Looking into her eyes was not a healthy thing for people to do. Hatter made no eye contact when Jordin addressed her as she sat down next to Jordin. Her smile was a little bit less blank as she spoke to Jordin. “I’m Hattie Clio, but most everyone at the hospital called me Hatter…. I like that; ‘Hatter’.” Hatter ignored the questions about why she was there and took out her purse, a gold affair with little jewels all over it. From it she pulled a blank piece of paper. She looked at it and read
“Dance a Jigger Ride the Pony From Boston Blended To the Cosmopolitan city Shoot for the stars Pangalactic Just bee’s delight for me.”
She laid the blank paper in front of Jordin. “Do you like my poem?”

Jordin stared down at the girl’s poem it seemed odd to her probably just as odd as the way the girl was dressed. Though it sounded kind of funny like her name almost something she would expect the mad hatter to say in Alice in Wonderland. “It sounds interesting; Hatter is there a meaning to it?” Jordin asked figuring she probably wouldn’t get anything out of her. She heard Hatter say something about a hospital she really hoped that wasn’t a mental hospital. She didn’t think that they would admit a crazy half-blood into the school would they? Maybe Hattie just liked being considered the weird girl or something; it seemed to be a trend now a day in her opinion.
As she waited for Hattie to answer her but her mind drifted elsewhere to the uneasiness. Her father was Dionysus god of wine and insanity, Jordin had a feeling if she made Hattie mad that she might hurt Jordin or something meaning, Hattie already did seem like she was over the fence anyways if you caught her drift. Looking away from the girl she let her eyes drift to the other students in the dining pavilion all of them focused on Jordin and Hatter.
It could have been because they knew how Hatter was and the fact they were sitting at a table where Jordin didn’t belong didn’t help much either. Even know Jordin had the feeling that Dionysus would strike her down with some invisible force and cause her to either be strangled with grape vines or end up in an asylum if she stayed her much longer. Jordin gave a visible shake at that thought and made a mental note to give a huge portion of her food to the gods tonight hopefully Mr. D would spare her for once.

Hatter’s eyes darted quickly over Jordin. She was afraid? Hatter didn’t want her said. But, it did mean that Jordin had excellent instincts for sensing dangers, so in that much she was happy for Jordin. Her smile went from warm to distant and half dreamy. She played with a bit of her ponytail. “Hatter… like the Mad Hatter.” She leaned close. “I’m a bit crazy,” she whispered as if it were a secret. She patted Jordin’s arm, as if they were sharing secrets. “I was in a hospital for a while. Same one my mother’s in. But monsters started coming. They weren’t safe. From the monsters, or me.” She sighed a little. “But when I left I came here, and this is a really nice place where I can make friends.” She moved her hand to Jordin’s with a bright smile. Her smile had never faltered, but a perceptive person would have noted the change in her tone. “So I’m thinking about sparkles and blood pudding. What do you think?” She wanted to change the subject. Hatter wasn’t sure she knew what she was talking about, more than most other people. She was fairly sure she was talking about a food, but she might be talking about what she wanted to decorate her room with. Were those two things similar? Should She be confused about this? A normal person wouldn’t be confused when figuring out whether they were talking about their meal or their décor. She picked at the table a little with her finger nail, pondering this dilemma. “Would you put that on a plate or walls?” She asked, trying to hide the worry in her voice. Perhaps this was why she was following Jordin. Maybe she just wanted someone to tell her when she was being crazy. Someone to help her be sane.

“Glitter can go on walls, pudding goes on plates though you can decorate your plate with glitter” Jordin said hoping to comfort the girl in some way. She seemed to be scared of herself and too be honest Jordin was feeling a little creeped out herself. Looking around Jordin noticed that the other kids were already getting up to get in line for their food. Jordin decided to do the same maybe Hatter would feel better with food in her stomach.
Jordin stood up then grabbed Hatter’s hand to pull her up with her. Why was she doing this? Jordin had no clue maybe she was too good of a person to leave a sick girl behind, maybe her maternal instincts were just telling her to at least try and make the girl feel better. “Let’s get you some food maybe we’ll ask the lunch ladies if they have pudding cups or something for you” Jordin offered and lead Hatter to the lunch line cutting in front of a few groups of people who weren’t paying attention or didn’t seem to care. Thanks for her senior privileges the underclassmen just parted like the red sea for her.
She got a tray for herself and Hatter then started to put some food on her own tray though the lunch rush was moving oddly slow as the main meal was starting to be served out. She looked at Hatter listening to anything she has to say but still conscious enough to move with the line. Jordin gave Hatter her own tray in case she wanted to grab a juice or some fruit along with her main course like how she had. To be honest Jordin was just happy to be out of Dionysus’s table she felt like he was going to electrocute her or something, though maybe he didn’t care since she was the somewhat friend of his daughter.

Hatter smiled when Jordin kept talking to her. When she stood Hatter thought she might be going to sit with someone more sane, but then she took Hatter’s hand and Hatter’s smile couldn’t have been brighter or more aware. She had a friend. A really pretty friend. Mentally, Hatter paused as she considered that thought. Yes, Jordin was very pretty. Why was that important to her? She did a mental shrug and decided to just enjoy having company while she ate.
When Jordin mentioned pudding cups, Hatter tittered. “Cups, and skins, and intestines, Blood pudding isn’t a desert, it’s sausage.” She gave Jordin’s arm a light little hug as they got to the line. Jordin handed Hatter her tray and Hatter examined everything available. Much of it looked good. There was no blood pudding, but Hatter had no problem with that she put a light salad on her plate, nothing strange actually. However she did put a small pile of fruit on one part of her tray along with some fruit juices. She seemed especially happy to see sealable bottles. If Jordin gave her any look about this Hatter would have just given her a wink and a conspiratorial smile. There was much a resourceful person could do with fruit juice, fruit, sealable containers and time. The school wouldn’t be “Dry” for long if She could do anythinga bout it.
When they reached the cashier Before Jordin could pay, Hatter quickly paid for them both. Her family was wealthy, and if she could be certified as fit or competent she would be a wealthy heiress. On their way back to the table, Hatter dug her pill bottles out from her bag and set them on the table. All of them were powerful anti-psychotics. “I’m used to getting them from the lunch servers,” she said about the pills. She thought about it and that was a very lucid comment to make in her opinion. She neglected to mention that the pills, no drugs at all in fact, actually affect her mental state and in reality she was actually just addicted to them.

Jordin nodding trying to no gawk at all the pills Hatter pulled out, she must be really sick if all those were for her. For a second Jordin worried she would over dose on them but then again they were prescription right? So the doctors must know if all those are really good or bad for her if they were bad Jordin imagined that they would never give them to her. “The only pills I’ve ever taken in my life were gummy bear vitamins when I was a kid” Jordin explained with a smile just joking a little. Her mom had been health conscious when Jordin was born and tried to feed her daughter chewy gummy bear vitamins to keep up her daughter’s immune system and such. She never had to take major prescription pills before, whenever Jordin was at camp Ambrosia and Nectar were available to her, and she never been majorly hurt before.
“So you’re dad is Dionysus right? What’s that like? My dad is Oceanus” Jordin added wondering if Hatter was close to her father. Jordin had met some half-blood children who were close to their fathers, her brother included. Jordin couldn’t help but be envious of her brother at times seeing as he had met their father in person. Actually he had been to their underwater palace repeatedly obviously Jordin couldn’t help but notice, that Jesse was probably the favorite out of the two. In her jealousy Jordin didn’t notice she was making the water in her drink and Hatter’s swish around restlessly responding to Jordin’s emotions.
Jordin flinched embarrassed and put her hand on the tops of the two water bottles and their contents rested peacefully once more. Jordin had to constantly remind herself to not lose her patience bad stuff happened. But being so adjusted to her powers Jordin knew how to control them as well as her limits pretty well by now.

“Prozac, for depression, Lithium for mania, Haldol for aggression,” She shrugged. “I don’t trust gummy bears. Who trusts something translucent?” She shook her head her eyes narrowed at the thought of gummy bears. “Sometimes I think the only thing I haven’t taken is Viagra.” She tittered, then considered whether this was funny or not. She really hoped she was being coherent. Friends don’t keep talking to you if you aren’t coherent.
When Jordin asked about Dionysus, Hatter gauged how to respond to that. She leaned down close to the water bottle to watch the contents swirl and swish. She had a talented friend. “My Daddy talks to be often,” she replied. “When I’m on my pills when I finish my concoction.” She smiled as she patted the pile of fruit. “I can’t be drunk,” she continued, her eyes still focused on the swirling water. “Chemicals just don’t affect my brain. No pretty colors or funny sounds… except for what’s already there. Because of my Daddy.” When Jordin stopped the water she sat up, and turtleed her head to the side.
“Are you mad? What made you mad?” Her tone became that of someone about to solve the problem of a stubborn peanut shell with stick of dynamite. “I can make them do things.” Her tone was not a pleasant one. “Your Daddy is nice to you right? Daddy’s should be nice to their girls. Mine was, he explained what was happening to me, how to find the school, and how I made my Mommy… He was really helpful.” She decided to not add that she could make people crazy, not realizing she’d suggested it already. “I just wish my gandparents could see how well I’m doing. I’m making friends and hooch.” She smiled as she started preparing one of the bottles to brew moonshine in.

“No my dad isn’t mean to me or anything, I guess I’m just a little mad that my brother Jesse met him and seen his palace and stuff and I never met him is all” Jordin explained trying to reassure Hatter. Though she assumed Hatter was harmless she couldn’t ignore that hidden threat when she asked Jordin if anyone had hurt or angered her. It was a bit unnerving but then she went back to being the happy kid again, it was odd.
“But that’s cool I’m not much of a partier so I don’t know how the not being able to get drunk would help me…but it still sounds cool” Jordin said referring to the abilities bestowed upon Hatter as her birth right. Jordin’s powers were mostly water related actually all of them were water related and practically the same as the children of Poseidon’s actually. So she wasn’t really that special when you thought about it even though she was a daughter of one of the big three Titans. The title had luster though she was considered a very rare child within the Half-Blood community but she didn’t think it was really that special.
“I have a mother, step father and a younger brother at home all of them are mortal they’re in Michigan where are you from?” Jordin asked watching Hatter make moonshine nervously, she knew that wasn’t allowed at mortal high schools so she doubted that it was allowed her. She scanned the mass of students looking for signs of a teacher who could get them in trouble for doing this, there was none but that didn’t make Jordin feel any better over the whole ordeal.
Trying to get her mind off the illegal moonshine making, Jordin took a bite of her food trying to focus on that till Hatter starting speaking again. She was beginning to relax around the freshman maybe even starting to consider her as a friend of sorts.

“Oh,” Hatter replied, happy to hear her friend’s daddy wasn’t mean. “He should still be nicer to you,” she pronounced as she continued her minor chemistry/felony. She herself wasn’t quite clear on why she was making hooch when there was a beverage dispenser in the Dionysus dorms that dispensed wine, but she felt strangely compelled to make and disseminate alcohol. Though, if she had to guess, she’d pin it more on her mother than father.
“I like parties,” Hatter replied to Jordin. “I’ve never really been to any, but I know I like them. My mother did too, that’s how she met my Daddy. She was at a party and they were both really drunk and I think she was on X so…” She held out her hands as if to say “Here I am”. “Parties are places where things happen,” she ruminated, somewhat to herself. She was packing up her bottle and eating the rest of her fruit. “Things can change, alliances be made and broken, history’s greatest loves started because of parties. Wars and assassinations, rebirth and renewal, all of it can happen at parties.” She shrugged. “Not sure how I know that, but I do. I’ve never been to a party myself,” she tapped her head. “Crazy,” she reminded Jordin, as if mentioning an old injury that prevented her from some task.
“My grandparents are alive and well in New York. They tried to take me in after my mom was committed, but I was crazy so I went to live at the hospital like mommy. It wasn’t that bad. Some people try and make mental places out to be nasty places run by bad people. And that wasn’t true. They wanted to make me better. Wish they could have.” She picked up a piece of sausage and ate it happily. While her smile remained that slightly manic smile, inside she was crying. She knew that wasn’t a normal child hood. She wished she’d had one, that she could have stayed with her grandparents. But she was crazy.

“I don’t think you’re that crazy” Jordin said in all honesty and reached over taking Hatter’s hand as a hopeful way of comforting the fourteen year old girl. “Do you like making illegal moonshine?…yes, do you follow people around who you don’t know in the slightest? Yes and do you need to come shopping with me for normal clothes sometimes? Yes you do. But see this is stuff that can be fixed crazy or not” Jordin rambled a bit but was laughing as well. So far Hatter was the only friend Jordin had in the whole school or at least even tried to make friends with her so Jordin felt obligated somehow to try and make her feel better.
“Maybe during the summer or whenever we get Vacation time here you can come over to Michigan with me and meet my family or I can ask my mom to let me visit you in New York?” Jordin offered thinking about the possibilities a little bit. She imagined how Hatter would cope in Michigan with her baby brother and her parents. She wasn’t sure if Hatter was a people person or okay to hang out with little kids seeing as her brother was a toddler. Plus Jordin was getting used to the Long Island area staying New York for a few days in the summer didn’t seem like that much of a stretch to her rather than having to take a plane ride back to Michigan.
‘Wait I can’t take planes…sky isn’t exactly my domain’ Jordin reminded herself mentally. Zeus was territorial of his domain in the sky. So essentially if you were the child of Poseidon, Hades or a Titan you would forever be in a no fly zone. Zeus did not want you anywhere near him even if you had to take a plane ride to get home. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Count:309 Muse: I think it's borderline angst....

It was a happy tear that traced its way down Hatter’s cheek. Jordin was such a nice friend. When Jordin put her hand on Hatter’s Hatter closed her hand around Jordin’s and leaned lightly against her shoulder. No one had ever wanted to be her friend before. Wow, Jordin’s shoulder was nice. “Well, I like my clothes,” she replied, playfully sticking her tongue out petulantly. Something Jordin might not have noticed were Hatter’s labels; Gucci, Prada, CK, and other high fashion labels. Hatter’s grandparents were rich, Hatter just though it looked better the way she coordinated them. She touched her bag with her hooch in it.
“I don’t know if I could visit your family,” she replied. “If I left here, I can’t go back to my grandparents because I’m supposed to be in the hospital otherwise. Plus it might not be safe for your family.” None of this despressed her, just confused her a bit. She really wasn’t sure what the rules were for her leaving here. It really would have been nice to see Jordin’s family, see how a family is supposed to be, but she would be worried about if she might accidently look them in the eyes. Some people thought her refusal to make eye-contact was somewhat like an Asperger’s symptom or other mental health concern. It wasn’t, it was for their protection. She liked being around people, especially Jordin, however, if Jordin tried to look at Hatter anywhere near her eyes, Hatter would jerk her face away suddenly. It was why Hatter didn’t wear eye shadow or mascara. Those things were supposed to draw the eyes to the eyes. That was dangerous.
She started to play with her food, using it to build some sort of structure. Hatter wasn’t sure what it was, but she was positive when she was done it would be pretty… like Jordin.

Jordin nodded about the comment of Hatter coming back with her to Michigan to visit she understood that she couldn’t visit but she could still visit her in New York seeing as it wasn’t that far from the school. Plus there was the entire school year left to hang out with her seeing as Hatter considered Jordin as her friend. Then she wondered how school usually went for Hatter she didn’t seem like the type to get a lot of friends and people seem confused just having Jordin talk to her. “So you like it here? This is my first year at the school since my dad asked me to come for some reason” Jordin explained. Being the new kid was already hard enough; it just seemed harder when you were the new kid that was transferring during senior year. It was depressing a bit that Jordin didn’t know that many kids yet.
She waited for Hatter to respond and she went on to picking at her food not feeling that hungry, actually she didn’t even notice what she told the lunch ladies she wanted apparently it was steak with mash potatoes and gravy. Jordin didn’t even know that was on the lunch menu today, maybe Dionysus was rewarding her for being nice to his daughter though she seriously doubted it. With a shrug Jordin took a bite of her steak then added a scoop of mash potatoes to the mix. It seemed like there was a part of flavors going on inside of her mouth and it made Jordin’s stomach go on a feeding frenzy. She had no idea she was that hungry. She soon started filling her mouth with food and had to drown it with water though she didn’t overly fill her mouth in fear of looking stupid.

“I haven’t been here long either. It’s nice,” She commented. “More freedom than the hospital. People are nicer than my last school. I went to a private school before my grandparents had me committed.” She wasn’t bitter about the committal, She just took it as something that had to happen. There were parts of her life she didn’t understand. And when she didn’t understand something, she just told herself that was how it had to be, and that was okay. It was a form of denial that was catching up with her the more she was around other kids with normal families. She was seeing how families were supposed to act and treat each other, and that those ways were nothing like the ways she’d grown up with. Her mother was a drunken debutant who’d devolved into insanity. Her grandparents were judgmental and distant. She’d never had much in the way of coddling or affection. “What do you think?”
She took another bite of food and grabbed the shaker. She looked at it, looked at Jordin, and giggled a little. She put the shaker down in front of Jordin, with a sly grin, as if passing her a note with a joke on it. The shaker was labeled “Sea Salt”. This had made a lot of connections in Hatter’s mind that caused her to slowly build from a giggle to cute little snorts. First was that Sea Salt, she was the daughter of Oceanus. The little snort was joined by a silent bouncing of the shoulders. The second was that Sea Salt was supposed to be good for you, as were friends, and Jordin was her friend. She completely lost control and gave into gales of raucus laughter. The last connection was light. For some reason, the fact that sea salt was supposed to taste good also made a connection with her, though she’d never tasted Jordin, nor did she have intentions of going “soylent green” on her. She wasn’t that crazy. After a few minutes she would get herself under control to hear Jordin’s reply or see if she’d gotten the joke.

Jordin laughed at Hattie’s joke over the sea salt, Jordin hadn’t even noticed that though she figured that she should have seeing as it was sea salt and all. Though maybe her powers only worked on water or other liquid things like that. It would make sense to her maybe she could ask Jesse about that later. “Funny” Jordin said smirking before sinking her teeth into her food once again savoring the meal she wouldn’t admit this to her mom but she found the food to be better than her cooking.
Jordin then turned her attention back to Hattie wondering how she should try to get to know her better. She figured that the people at the hospital might now try to get to know their patients as well though that might have just been her stereotype of asylums. “So Hattie….what’s your favorite color?” Jordin asked though the question she figured was very cliché she had nothing really else to ask since she had ask if Hattie was enjoying school. After she asked Hattie what her favorite color was she began thinking what her favorite color was as well. Her mother’s favorite had been blue her step-father’s was brown then her brother’s was at that age where it was changing every day. She herself suppose her favorite color was green, though more sea green to be exact sadly though her mother hated the color and would never let her paint her room at home that way. Then in the Oceanus dorm Jordin’s room was consistent of blues and whites then decorated with ocean memorabilia.
Letting her thoughts drift away Jordin took a drink of her water purposely missing the moonshine that Hattie was making. She had math next period and would rather not go into the class she hated the most drunk, she was already bad enough at the subject.

Hatter smiled brightly when Jordin appreciated her joke. She ate a piece of fruit and thought about other jokes she might be able to tell. Maybe her joke about the mantis and the Boeing 747… wait, did that joke actually make sense or was it crazy? Her eyes became unfocused a bit, which was a sign that she was disturbed or troubled about something. She still smiled though, just more distantly. Did that joke make sense? She tossed her head slightly trying to make the joke sound sane, but Jordin had asked her a question.
Favorite color? Hatter thought about that for a minute. She liked a lot of colors and patterns. She saw many of them that she knew weren’t really there. For a moment she looked right at Jordin and then, lifting a lock of Jordin’s hair, she answered. “This color. I like pale purple with leaf-green polka dots.” Then she lowered her voice to a whisper and added, “I especially like the green polka dots,” as if this were something that probably shouldn’t be overheard; embarrassing, but not disgusting. Of course Jordin’s hair was not pale purple with leaf-green polka dots, and Hatter was well aware of this. She simply believed that Jordin’s hair best illustrated the color she was describing.
Despite being concerned earlier about an off-color joke involving an insect and an airliner, she was not at all concerned with if this statement sounded crazy. She seemed not to have noticed that it was nonsensical. She was simply happy to answer Jordin’s question. She took another bite of fruit. It was so juicy and tastey. Her hooch was going to turn out great. She hadn’t corrected Jordin’ before, who had stated that Hatter was making moon-shine. Moon-shine required a still and was generally made from corn, like whiskey. This was hooch; an ad-hoc alcohol made from whatever fermenting supplies one had on hand in an improvised sealed vessel, usually produced in prisons and military camps. Hatter of course had no honest way to explain how she knew the difference, other than her father, but she knew. She didn’t correct as that wasn’t what friends did.
