She was trying her best to tread water, but something kept trying to pull her beneath the surface. Every now and then, her head would go underwater, but she managed to keep coming up for air…
Suddenly, Natalia Wolfgang felt someone shake her awake. Her eyes flew open, fear registering on her face as she looked around frantically. Was the dream real? No, she realized as her gaze found her mother’s face staring back at her. It wasn’t real. She could feel the familiar heat rising up inside her as she asked, “What is it, Mom? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing’s wrong, sweetheart,” Lucinda said as she smiled at her daughter. She knew that her daughter had been having a nightmare, but didn’t say anything about it. Instead, she said, “We’re here.”
Leah looked up at the large building before her. This is the place my mom is sending me? She wondered as she stepped out of the car and examined the school. It was large and, in the distance, she thought she heard raised voices. As she began to step toward the entrance, she realized her mother was still standing by the car. Turning towards her, she asked, “Aren’t you coming in with me?”
Lucinda shook her head with a sad expression on her face. “I can’t,” she said. “Only staff and students can enter the Academy, not their parents.”
Fear and sadness began to overwhelm her as she listened to her mother say this. The heat in her veins grew more ferocious. The last time she felt like this, the curtains in her bedroom had caught on fire. A part of her knew that she was somehow causing these unexplainable fires, but her more logical side thought that this couldn’t be possible. She couldn’t start fires with her mind, could she?
Lucinda could tell that her daughter was taking the news hard. On instinct, she walked over to her daughter and took her into her arms. “It’s going to be alright. You will be safe here, I promise. This is the safest place I can think of to send you to and you can write to me whenever you want, okay?”
“Okay, Mom,” Leah said as she hugged her mother back. A mixture of emotions rushed through her body and it took all of her control not to let down the barriers she had up. These barriers were probably the only thing that kept the fire inside of her in check.
After a few minutes, Lucinda let go of her daughter and went to get her backpack and duffel bag out of the car. She brought them over to Natalia and handed them to the teenage girl. “I love you, sweetheart,” she said to her daughter as she hugged her daughter one last time.
“I love you, too,” the sixteen year old girl replied before letting go of her mother and began to walk through the woods. When she turned to wave at her mother, she saw that the middle-aged woman was already driving away. As she watched her mother drive away, she hitched the strap of her backpack further up on her shoulder and gripped the handle of her duffel bag tighter as she looked around. She didn’t know what to do now.

Dahlia walked through the woods, she decided to give herself a proper tour of the grounds of the academy. She hadn't been here all that long herself, just a little over a week. Although she had been claimed at thirteen, her father kept her sheltered from this part of her life, so she never really understood. until her seventeenth birthday, she finally got the chance to ask him some questions about who she really was, as she’d always known she was different to most girls. She was surprised that her mother was Greek goddess, but she wasn’t at all surprised at which one she was. At first she thought it was a joke, but no-one was laughing, she was told not to tell her step-mother, but they both knew she wasn’t going to anyway. Her father still hadn’t told her about this place though, she only found out about this place when she was attacked by a fury in the theatre.
Today she wore a black dress with a pink floral print on it, the dress ended mid-way down her thigh, a pair of black tights and on her feet some shiny black dolly shoes. She’d taken off her cardigan as she got too warm walking through the woods, she carried it in her arms. Her long whit hair was down today, but she hadn’t straightened it, she went with the natural look, people always envied her long wavy locks of white hair, their comments always seemed to be filled with bitterness, but it still made her smile. Her make-up was done immaculately, her eyes heavily done up with eye-liner, just to make her piercing icy blue eyes stand out on her face. Her lips were the colour of rubies, and her skin was as pale as snow. Most girls like being tanned, but not Dahlia, she thought being pale was the way forward. Every time she looked in the mirror she always thanked her goddess mother for the power of her beauty, she could see why the other girls got so jealous.
As she walked further on through the woods, she saw a girl just outside the gateway. She stood there for a moment, not sure what to do, did she need help? She wasn’t sure. But if she could help it, she’d try not to be seen, she wasn’t the most helpful person, with her b*tchy attitude and sarcastic comments.

Natalia hadn't yet seen Dahlia, mostly because she was preoccupied by her overwhelming emotions and the fire that fought to get out. Seconds passed before she loosened her grip on her duffel bag and it wasn't long before the bag hit the ground. She rarely was awake when her firestarting power grew this out of control and it took her by storm. "Oh, God," she whispered as she began to sweat, mostly due to the heat she felt coming to the surface.
Before she knew it, a tree burst into flames close by and she fell to a crouching position as she screamed and covered her head. The heat continued to build inside her and she knew that it wouldn't be long before she did something awful to anyone close by. She had to calm down, but all she felt was fear and sadness.
She began to cry as she heard another tree burst into flames. I want my mom, she thought as she continued to crouch, but was no longer screaming. Suddenly, the words of a lullaby that her mother had sung to her when she was little came into her mind.
Golden slumbers kiss your eyes, Smiles await you when you rise. Sleep, pretty baby, Do not cry, And I will sing a lullaby.
Cares you know not, Therefore sleep, While over you a watch I'll keep. Sleep, pretty darling, Do not cry, And I will sing a lullaby.
The sound of her mother's voice filling her mind soothed her and soon she was sitting on the ground with her eyes closed. She held onto the song in her head until the last bit of fear and sadness had left her body. When she felt safe again, she opened her eyes and looked around. The trees were still burning, but she wasn't overwhelmed with the fear of it all. She ended up just sitting there for a while, not wanting to move in fear of losing the memory of her mother's beautiful voice.

Dahlia watched close by in horror as a tree burst into flames. She stood frozen on the spot, not knowing what to do. The girl knelt down screaming, covering her head, Dahlia looked at her, her mouth ajar, why wasn’t she doing anything to stop it? Dahlia considered her options, should she run and get help while the rest of the forest could possibly burn down. Or does she help the girl first, then run to get help for the trees.
Dahlia watched for seconds more, knowing she was only wasting time, but usually in cases like this she was no help at all, usually she just stood watching until someone else came along. This time she knew no one was near by. Another tree burst into flames and she took a couple of steps back. Still deciding on which of her options to choose. She balled up her fists which seemed to be stuck by her side. Se took a deep breath and began walking steadily towards the girl. Dahlia had figured that this girl was the cause of the fire and if she was correct, she didn’t want to scare her and end up like the trees.
The screaming had stopped and it seemed like the girl was spacing out. Dahlia crouched down beside her and slowly touched her shoulder. The girl was looking up now, although she seemed like she’d calmed down now Dahlia was still being cautious.
Hey there, I’m Dahlia….. Are you okay? We need to get you away from these trees, love. They could collapse at any time, even worse is the fire could spread, we need to get you away from here now and get some help to put out the fires. Would you be okay to move? Dahlia grimaced and kept taking quick glances at the trees she could feel the heat rolling off them. She picked up the girls bag and held out her hand to help her up.

Still in shock, Natalia just looked at the girl as she talked. She knew that it wasn't safe for her here and that she had to move. Taking a deep breath, she took the girl's hand and stood up. For a couple of seconds, she rocked back and forth, clearly drained of the energy that had been drained from her when she set the trees on fire.
When she steadied herself, she picked up her duffel bag, the charm bracelet on her wrist jingling as she did so. The sun charm stood out like a beacon against the other charms she had on it. It was made of real gold and was intricately made. Only a really good jewelry maker could make it most likely. As it jingled, the sun glinted off it and shown in Leah's eyes. She looked away from the charm as she began to make her way through the woods.
"Do you go to the Academy?" she asked quietly after a few minutes had passed. She glanced at Dahlia every now and then and knew that she must be scared of her. I should have packed a fire extinguisher, she thought as she continued to walk. I knew that something like this would happen, but I didn't know that it would be this bad. What would happen if the fire from those two trees spread to the other trees before anyone could get to them in time to put the fire out? I'm going to be in so much trouble. As she thought these things, she began to chew on her lower lip.
The fire returned to her veins and she put the barriers she had built over the years up, hoping to control the fire inside of her. I have to calm down, she thought as she continued to walk. I can't lose control again, not now. I don't want to hurt this girl and if I lose control I know that I will.

The old Bentley rolled to a halt in front of the gates as the other two girls were talking. The driver, an older man in uniform, looked at the burning. He was about to speak when the female next to him said, “Colonel, This is supposedly a school for demi-gods,” She chuckled a little. “That’s probably fairly normal.” He obviously didn’t want to let it go, but the two of them exchanged a look. She didn’t want to prolong the departure. It was hard for her to say goodbye to the only father figure she’d ever known. He was a man she idolized and modeled her own life after. She grabbed the picture of the sabre and blade that she’d taken after she’d broken it. She still wanted to find a way to replace it. “Keep your nose clean,” he finally said. “And your head high.” “Semper Fi, Colonel,” she recited to him as she gave him one of her very rare hugs. She opened door and climbed out. Her grandfather reached back and pulled her duffle out and he handed it to her. She took it and slung it over her shoulder and snapped him a salute, which he returned before driving away. She took a deep breath and started jogging up the drive to the gate. She was wearing thick boots, a white wife-beater (With matching sports bra) and snow-camo BDU’s. Her hair was in a tight regulation bun. She saw the two girls and made for them. She looked at the burning trees. Something about the light from the fire made her feel good… comfortable. “Ooh Rah ladies,” she called. “Any particular reason for the giant size bon fire or are we in a bit of trouble?” She was trying to sound nonchalant, hoping to not appear as a spaz or some ignorant jar-head.

Natalia turned around when she heard the sound of a voice she didn’t recognize. When she saw the girl with the army clothes and the tight regulation bun, she wondered if she could trust her. Soon, she heard her ask if there was a particular reason for the bonfire or if they were in a bit of trouble. Taking a deep breath, she looked down at the ground she was standing on and said, “That’s my fault. I kind of started it by accident. I know that this may be a weird question, but do you happen to have a fire extinguisher with you or something to put it out with? I would have brought mine, but my mom talked me into leaving it at home.”
The fire she felt in her veins was starting to get worse as she continued to worry about what these girls were thinking about her and what the school faculty will do when they find out that she set some trees on fire. Aren’t these people supposed to be close to nature or something? Plus, there’s that little bit about not wanting to draw attention to where these kids are at. God, I’m going to be in so much trouble, she thought to herself as she let go of Dahlia’s hand and stepped away from the two teenage girls as her barriers began to crumble. She began to sweat as the fire continued to try to beat its way past the barriers she was trying to keep up.
“Um… we should probably get to… the Academy…” she said as she took deep breaths between her words and tried to keep her mind clear of the negative thoughts she was thinking. It was hard, though, because they kept coming back. Shutting her eyes, she put all of her strength into not letting her firestarting power get the best of her.

Fire Extinguisher. Come to think of it that actually should have been something that was packed. She shook her head, but also saw the expression on her face. Either she was about to throw up or… she looked at the trees. ‘I kind of started it by accident,’ She’d said. Becky also had a power because of her father. If this girl was the daughter of some fire god or goddess and this happened by accident, she was a dangerous one. But the only way to avoid accident’s like this, Becky knew, was training and discipline.
Becky nodded to the blonde and felt that old familiar confusion. She was definitely attracted to her, at least on a physical level, same as she was attracted to Usher. She usually wasn’t the kind to just lust for someone she’d hadn’t said two words to, but there was something about this girl. Her grandfather, though he had never broached the subject directly had never made her feel that this confusion was anything to be ashamed of. He’d always said that the only thing the left, politically speaking, got right was that if someone was willing to wear a uniform and serve, it didn’t matter what they did in their bedroom. There was an old saying; the only color a Marine sees is Green (Referring to a normal field uniform).
“Sorry, Sparky,” she told Natalia, not knowing the girl’s real name. “No fire extinguisher. But you’re right, they’d probably have one up at the school.” She looked at the burning trees. “We might want to double time our march up there,” she suggested. “No need to let that burn out of control for too long.”
As she walked up even with the girls, she held her hand out. “Rebecca Caliper, most call me ‘Becky’.” She gave what she considered a respectful nod of the head, though some would have seen it as curt.
