Personality:
One thing Chloe is very well known about asides from her affinity to flowers and plants is her honesty, she is probably the most honest person you could ever meet. She doesn’t really know why she just isn’t capable of lying, even when she does attempt to do so at some point people can look through her like she was a plastic bag. But she isn’t the straight forward kind of honest person, usually when she encounters a question she doesn’t want to answer it’s either she would change the topic or just stop talking and try to get out of the sticky situation. It’s one of her weaknesses since she really couldn’t help but tell the truth all the time, it’s why people don’t really confide their secrets in her and why she never really takes part in preparing surprise parties for her friends. But sometimes it could be a good thing because people appreciate how honest she is, because they can also sense she means no malice and has a pure heart. They just find it a little bit annoying when she let’s things slip when they are not supposed to.
Another thing about Chloe is that she is very gentle and soft-spoken, she doesn’t like shouting and too much noise, she just likes things to be all cool and peaceful. She is very against war and fighting but there are really times where she has no other choice but to do so in order to protect herself and others, which is why she goes to Half Blood Academy. When she isn’t required to fight she likes spending her time with friends or alone anywhere peaceful where she can reflect on her thoughts and maybe meditate a bit to relax her senses after a day of tiring training. She doesn’t like getting angry at people, especially those who are close to her and are her friends. Usually when she’s at the verge of getting angry at someone she takes a deep breath and closes her eyes for a short while, and when she opens them again she just smiles and says that everything’s all right. So basically she’s a girl who likes it when things are just smooth sailing and all mellowed down.
Lastly, and very obviously, Chloe is very open about her love for plants, flowers, and basically anything that grows naturally from the Earth. It’s obvious because, of course her mother is the Goddess of harvest and the fertility of the Earth. She loves spending her free time and alone time in gardens or in the middle of a quiet forest, where she can be with the plants and flowers that she loves so much. She isn’t afraid to get down and a little dirty while she tends to her garden back home, she finds it much easier and peaceful to do a little meditating in the middle of the garden. Probably the only time she gets really mad is when someone would step on a very small portion of her garden back home, usually it’s her younger 12-year-old stepbrother Brian who falls victim to such a thing. To sum up everything, Chloe is a plant-loving hippie-ish girl who can’t tell a lie.
History:
Matthew Guthrie was a simple man who ran a simple business, and that was running selling different kinds of flowers, especially the ones he grew on his very own garden. It wasn’t that he liked flowers to the extreme, it was just that being the eldest child he inherited the family business right after his parents died in a car accident, he was only in his early 20s then. He was rather young and pursuing a course in law but had to stop in order to support his four younger siblings by running the flower shop, they had their own studies to attend to and he didn’t want to hinder their studying, so instead he sacrificed his own. It was a bit depressing for his part since he was a consistent Dean’s list student since his first year in college, but he accepted his responsibility as the eldest child and quickly overcame his slightly immature thought of abandoning the needs of his younger siblings for his own. He did slightly like gardening and helping out with the shop every once in a while, at first it was very hard but he came through and the business started doing good. He never knew that because of his current job he would meet a very special woman, and he wouldn’t even know just how special that woman would be.
He had a regular customer who happened to be a very beautiful woman, who spent most of her time appreciating all the flowers in the shop before purchasing one she thought stood out the most. She never failed to show up every week and every time she visited she always purchased a different bouquet of flowers from the last, sort of like she was collecting all the flowers Matthew was growing in his garden bit by bit. Of course how could Matthew not give her any special attention whenever she was around? From the first time he first laid eyes on her he fell head over heels in love. They engaged in small talk for the first few meetings, mainly just talking about the flowers in the shop. Then it went from small talk to longer, friendly conversations, and from that he started flirting with her and trying to ask her out on dates. At first she never really wanted to go out with Matthew, but his persistence seemed sweet, charming and with good intention, so she eventually caved in.
He took her out on a garden dinner date, which really suited the taste of the two nature lovers, and it was during that date where he finally learned her name, since she always changed the subject whenever he asked for her name. Her alias that time was Denise Bloom, he thought it was a strange name at first but he shook it off because he also thought it was rather cute. “Denise” found Matthew to be quite charming, and they had a lot in common when it came to plants, so to make the long story short, they eventually fell for each other hook line and sinker. They went on a few dates after, and Denise seemed to visit the flower shop more often now just to see Matthew and to appreciate the flowers he was growing. It happened a little over probably four months of them dating, on a slow day at the shop when Denise was probably the only customer there, the two were just doing the usual flirting and making out. Then one thing led to another, and well, Matthew closed the flower shop for a while and they went off in the backroom and the rest I think you can fathom.
Right after that day, Denise never showed up again at the flower shop, which broke Matthew’s heart to a great extent. He felt betrayed, and fell into a depression he found harder to overcome than when he had to stop schooling in order to support his younger siblings. It came to a point where he started neglecting his garden and the flower shop, and all that was really left in that quaint shop were flowers on the verge of wilting away into nothing. His siblings couldn’t do anything about his depression, they tried keeping up with the garden and the shop but they had their studies too. The shop had to be closed then because there really was no one who was looking after it properly, all the flowers have died and there was nothing to do about it since Matthew decided to take up law again so his mind would be focused on something else other than Denise since the shop reminded him too much about her. It was in law school where he met Heather Kincaid, who was just a bit younger than he was.
The two seemed to have hit off very well and they became very close, they started dating after a few months and their relationship seemed very good. Months after that Denise incident Matthew was at his apartment cuddling with Heather in front of the TV when the doorbell rang, of course by instinct he excused himself from Heather and stood up to answer the door. Waiting behind the door he opened was a beautiful basket that seemed to have been made entirely out of vines and flowers, and inside, bundled up in a blanket was a baby, with a letter placed neatly on top of the bundle. Out of shock he called for Heather after taking the letter and hiding it in his jacket, having the feeling that the letter contained something only he was supposed to know. Heather came rushing to his side and stared with wide eyes at the sleeping baby in the basket, with great care she took the basket with the baby in it inside and set it on the coffee table, Matthew following after. He then confessed to Heather about a woman he had met before her, and he’s thinking that this was probably their baby.
Heather didn’t respond for a long time, and asked to take a step out of the room for a bit to organize and understand her thoughts, Matthew understood and let her do so. When she had stepped out he took this chance to take out the letter and read it, the letter went as such:
Dearest Matthew,
My deepest and sincerest apologies for having abandoned you and put you in such great sadness by leaving, it wasn’t my choice to leave you like this, it was the choice of my brother to never see you again. It’s not easy to disobey my brother; I would be severely punished if I do so, for my brother is a very powerful person. And he can’t only destroy me; he can destroy you as well.
You see, I’ve been lying throughout our whole relationship. My name is not Denise Bloom, and I don’t come from a small farm in North Carolina. You can choose to believe me or not, but I swear, I am being the most honest person I am as I write this letter.
My real name is Demeter, Goddess of Harvest and Fertility of the Earth. The brother I was talking about, is Zeus, the ruler of the Gods. Until now I am still forbidden to make contact to you, but seeing as the baby in the basket is the product of our last intimate meeting Zeus has given me the chance to for one last time.
Yes, the baby in the basket is our baby. A beautiful girl, truly a blessing, but it is a rule here in Olympus that no God or Goddess would be allowed to see their children, so I entrust her life to you. Her name is Chloe, which means “blooming” in Greek. I trust that you would be the best father to her, and that Heather would be a very good mother, because a child like her deserves a happy family.
Pay attention now because this is a very important reminder, before she turns twelve she has to be trained to be a fighter seeing as she is half-God, half-human. You will have to give her to Half Blood Academy where all the heroes are trained accordingly to protect others, a life of a demi-god isn’t as easy as it sounds, I want her to be prepared to defend herself against danger if ever that would happen, Zeus forbid. The directions to the camp are behind this letter.
Please take care of our baby, and please do as I instructed, this is for her own good. She isn’t to know about her real mother until she is ready to go to Half Blood Academy. I love the both of you very much, goodbye.
Sincerely,
“Denise”
Matthew really couldn’t believe it at first, but looking at the seemingly handmade basket of vines and flowers, there was a possibility. Heather came back in the room, and the baby named Chloe started to wake up. Matthew got up and carefully got the baby out of the basket, and was taken aback by the light brown locks and her chocolate colored eyes, she really looked like the child of a Goddess. Even Heather was taken aback by the beautiful girl in her boyfriend’s arms as she sat next to him, and after talking about it, decided they would get married and raise the little girl as if she really were the daughter of Heather and Matthew. Things went on smoothly for the next few years, the two really got married and Chloe was a very happy little daddy’s girl. Heather got pregnant with Matthew’s second child five years after, and when he was born was named Brian.
Matthew and Heather did their best to make Chloe and Brian have the best childhood, and immediately noticed how Chloe loved gardening even when she was still a very little girl, Matthew understood why too much. He had told Heather that one day she would have to go to this certain camp and practically live there before she was twelve, he didn’t tell her all the details, thinking that she would probably say that he was crazy saying that his past girlfriend was actually a Greek Goddess. t resulted to a few fights since Heather had grown rather close to little Chloe, but she eventually caved in seeing it in her husband’s eyes was essential to Chloe’s life. A few months after Chloe’s 11th birthday, she was told by Matthew that she was going to have to pack her things because that was the day she was leaving for Half Blood Academy. It confused Chloe at first, but being daddy’s girl she obeyed like a little puppy following orders without question. During the car ride to Half Blood Academy, Matthew told her the truth about who her real mother was.
Of course Chloe had learned about Gods and Goddesses in school, but she never thought they actually existed and that she was actually a living breathing daughter of Demeter. It sort of made her understand why she was so into gardening and plants or anything green but she still couldn’t believe it, but she knew her dad would never lie about such a thing, she got her honesty from Matthew. It was when they finally reached Half Blood Academy and she saw that her father couldn’t get through the barrier did she think that this was really for real, with one last hug and a tearful goodbye she had to go in on her own and face a whole different world of fighting and magical things by herself. The first few years of being in Half Blood was a little hard for a girl like her, but in due time she started to get along with the different people here and learned a lot of things teachers in her mortal school can’t teach her. She still receives and sends letters to her father and mother from time to time, and so far as a seventeen year old in Half Blood Academy she is doing quite fine.
