Lets Get More Personal
Likes:
-Spending time at the beach.
-Collecting sea shells (she has a very extensive collection)
-Pegasus riding
-Pegusi that have a sense of humor (she particularly likes the ones who tell her bad knock knock jokes)
-Bad knock knock jokes (the type that no one ever gets because they're so lame as to be unfunny. They always leave her in stitches)
-Sea horses (because they're so fragile and pretty. Ariel has a pair of them as pets. She calls them Spades and Clubs and intends to get two more to call Hearts and Diamonds)
- Hanging out with Odette Brown (Her best friend)
- Spending time with her siblings (Especially Jesse and Lance who just happen to be her favorite brothers. She can usually be seen following them around like a lost puppy.)
- Paul Haxon (She's had a crush on him since forever. It doesn't help that she thinks Connor is an adorable middle name)
- Cotton candy (anything sweet really, since Ariel has a massive sweet tooth.)
- Dressing up and being girly. (She takes good care of her appearance, so much so that people mistake her for a daughter of Aphrodite sometimes.)
Dislikes:
- Math (It's evil. She doesn't understand it. She doesn't know why they insist on teaching it in school)
- People not bothering to explain things to her. (Ariel is not the sharpest tool in the box. She gets confused a lot of the time and really appreciates it if people take the time to explain things to her.)
- People talking down to her. (While Ariel is aware that she's not very smart, she's also a firm believer that this does not give anyone the right to be rude or mean to her. Sarcastic or outright rude comments on her intelligence are not appreciated)
- Water pollution.
- Felines. (She admires them, but mostly mistrusts them. Cats and fish...you know?)
- Keller Foster (Mostly because of the time he tricked her into wearing a sea shell bra for him by telling her that he only had three months to live.)
- The fact that Paul only sees her like a little sister. (And they say she's dumb. Boys are worst!)
- Spicy food. (Ariel can't stand anything hot. It makes her turn red)
- Sea Food restaurants. (Especially the ones that keep the food that they're going to cook in tanks. She thinks this type of practice is cruel and besides she can't stand sitting in a restaurant and talk to the fish/lobsters about to be cooked. It's like talking to someone on death row.)
- Sea turtles (She doesn't care what Finding Nemo says, sea turtles are a grumpy lot.)
- The color lavender. (No reason why, she just like all the other colors better.)
Personality: It's a very obvious joke to go for but people often tease Ariel about her name. It's a product of over sentimentality on her mother's part and also probably because she was drugged out when the nurse asked what she wanted to name her new baby girl. Those close to Ariel though, would say that the name while quite fitting, didn't turn out to be a kind of self fulfilling prophecy. She didn't grow up to be some spunky, overly curious child and instead acts more like Flounder then the Disney princess that she was named for. In fact, Flounder is the nickname that her friends have chosen to give her and it has become something that she prefers over her given name.
To elaborate, Ariel is an open book type of person. Totally transparent, she's like a clear pool of water. Just one glance is all it takes for you to see everything through to the bottom. She has no talent for masking her emotions or schooling her features into blank or calm expressions. You'll certainly be able to notice if she's happy or angry or sad and you can bet money on the fact that such emotions are genuine. Ariel is a bad actress and is even worse at lying. This is due to the the fact that aside from being unable to hide her feelings and thoughts, Ariel is also guileless. She doesn't have a manipulative bone in her body and certainly has no head for the playground politics that most teenagers indulge in. This has it's obvious downsides, Ariel is very open to trickery and wouldn't know when someone is trying to pull a fast one on her even if they came an announced their intentions before hand. She sees the good in people. Trouble is, that's all she sees.
Sweet and friendly are generally the two words that describe Ariel the best. Though if you want to be mean you could also say that she's dumber then a sack of bricks. You wouldn't be wrong though, Ariel is the perfect example of how physical beauty and intelligence can be inversely proportionate to each other. She's slow on the uptake and doesn't fare very well in chaotic situations. A slow learner, Ariel is at her worse when trying to pick up fighting skills. She doesn't trust weapons and hates violence. Since the demigod way of life is centered around such things, some people have dubbed Ariel a wussy because she doesn't seem to specialize in any one weapon.
It bothers Ariel though when people are mean to her. She cares (sometimes too much) about the opinions of others and it often hurts her when people are mean to her face. What happens is that she'll try to clumsily win them over and just end up making a pest out of herself. Some people never like being ask questions like, 'Why do you hate me?' in a point blank way. A girly girl, Ariel comes across as the damsel in distress type and is just the kind to drive those tomboyish girls up the wall. Despite her short comings though, Ariel is a very good fiend to have on your side. She may not be very witty but will always provide a listening ear. Loyal to a fault, she goes out of her way to make sure that those who count her as a friend are always happy and smiling, even if this means telling them bad knock knock jokes.
History: Anybody making a study of Jennine Spencer would never guess that this woman would be somebody who attracted Poseidon, God of the Sea. She comes from a family that could easily put a capital T in typical. Close knit, though not without petty fights breaking out between her and her other two siblings, Jennine was also lucky enough to be blessed with parents who knew how to balance between being supportive and being protective. But the Spencers were never a particularly sea loving type, nor did they ever think to encourage a love for the Sea in Jennine. A once a year family trip to the beach was the extent of it and even then, she would never spend time in the water. Sand was more Jennine's thing and she would always be making castles from it or drawing pictures in it and would largely ignore her brother and sister when they tried to get her into the water. But just because she never paid it much attention to the water, didn't mean that the thing that lived and ruled over it was doing the same for her.
Growing up, Jennine never seemed to grow out of her love for art and making things. The little girl who had made sandcastles and who had drawn pictures in the sand with sticks had evolved into a budding artist. It was no surprise when she opted to go into an arts course at University. And this was when Jennine hit a road block in the form of a very nasty professor. Her parents were always supportive of her work, but they were parents and would always be under the sway of parental bias. As for her high school arts teacher, the professor made it quite clear when he humiliated her in front of the class, that high school teachers were nothing more then underpaid hacks.
Getting her work criticized so harshly was not something that Jennine had expected when she signed up for classes. Perhaps it was childish but she ended up at the beach and hurled her portfolio into the water. Plopping down onto the sand, she started to make sandcastles only to get interrupted a few seconds later by a guy who informed her that she had hit him on the head with her portfolio. Upset and embarrassed, Jennine failed to notice that the folder that should have been soaking wet was instead the opposite.
The guy introduced himself as Perry and explained that he had been swimming when her portfolio had come out from nowhere. Jennine wanted to be alone but she couldn't bring herself to tell Perry to go away and ended up forcing herself to talk to him. As their conversation wore on though, she found that she was forcing herself less and less and that she actually enjoyed his company. He was rather mysterious but that was the thing that only made her more interested.
They made plans to meet again and it was on their fifth meeting that Perry told her who he really was. Even though they met at the beach, Jennine would insist that they stay on land. This time though he managed to convince her to come into the water with him and when she did, Perry dragged her into deeper waters. At first Jennie panicked but then realized oddly enough that she could breathe underwater. She listened with wide eyes as Perry explained that he was actually Poseidon. He remembered her when she came to the beach as a child and had always found it curious that she would always refuse to go into the water. It made him laugh to no end when she replied that she had always thought that the water was boring compared to sand that could be molded into anything. He spent that day changing her mind and when night rolled around, she spent that with him too.
This was the last time that they saw each other, but a few months later Jennie realized that she was pregnant. Nine months later she gave birth to a baby girl whom she named Ariel. Jennine wanted it to be a sort of tribute to Poseidon though the name only ended up being the reason why her daughter got teased on the kindergarten playground. Enlisting the help of her parents to look after the baby, Jennine went back to that arts course. She had grown up a lot since then and didn't let the professor and his nasty comments effect her. And so Ariel grew up in more or less the same environment that her mother did. She was a pretty baby with a mild disposition and her grandparents doted on her.
As she grew up though, it became rather obvious that she was slightly different from the other kids around her. A trip to the fair ended up with her making a spectacle of her herself when she talked to the ponies working the pony rides. She got even more weird looks when she told anyone who would listen that one of the ponies told awfully good knock knock jokes. Jennie tried hard to ignore things, but stranger and stranger things started to happen and some of them more sinister then having ponies telling her daughter jokes. When Ariel came home complaining that she was being followed by a man with one eye, Jennie was at a lost for what to do. Luckily Poseidon chose that time to visit her again. It was a short visit, apparently he had a storm to oversee in the Atlantic. He told her that she should send Ariel to Camp Half Blood and gave her directions to where the camp actually was. In the morning it transpired that he wasn't giving her much of a choice on the matter either, children of the Big Three were monster magnets and he didn't want Jennie or Ariel to end up getting eaten, as one of Ariel's teachers came knocking on their door. It turned out that Mrs Smith was a satyr in disguise and after a few minutes of rushed packing they were out the door and heading towards camp half blood.
The sudden rush of activity was confusing to Ariel. Her mother tried to explain everything to her on their way to camp but this was largely disrupted by the group of cyclopes on their tail. It was only thanks to 'Mrs Smith's' crazy driving that no one ended up being dinner. As soon as Ariel was safely within camp boundaries, the symbol of the trident appeared over her head. With just three days before her thirteenth birthday, Poseidon had officially claimed her.
