Personality: Marina is your typical run-of-the-mill laid-back surfer chick. Her emotions like the waves can be unexpected or completely predictable. Unlike most girls her age, she has no problems with guys or men. In fact- she'd prefer the company of men over women any day. They were less complicated, they spoke their mind and drama was the smallest on the scale. She could be labeled as a tomboy because of her likeness to guys. These features though don't cancel out her female attributes; on plenty occasions she's been complimented on her beauty and skills, her sometimes rare grace in battle or her inability to walk a straight line without faceplanting off the side walk or running into something.
Being a daughter of Neptune, her personality is slightly different then her Poseidon half siblings. Much like all Romans, Mari was shaped and molded from discipline and strength. Taught not to question orders and just comply to them- to execute with the right battle strategies and learn from her supposed few mistakes. She knows how to take action and lead when needed. This side of her is completely opposite from her laid back demeanor. She has the ability to shut out all distractions that before she wouldn't be able to, to be efficient and deadly like a wolf. Silent and stealthy, but quick and ruthless. In this mode she is never to be tested, for the amount of kindness she can give you equals to the more venomous her words can bite if caught at the wrong time. Word to the wise: don't ever break her boards- unless you want her to break your legs.
Mari is lonely. Her entire life she has lived alone in the Neptune cabin, with no one to look after her but herself. Though she may not show it ever, this aspect is very strong in her and is hard to forget. It is a large reason why she doesn't have problems with many of the Greeks. And isn't affected by the invisible veil that separates the two groups. In some ways she finds them slightly annoying and often careless of their actions which in turn makes her dislike them. But somewhere in her mixture of emotions her curiosity gets the better of her. Marina may seem careless, but in truth she is never careless about her actions. Like the ocean waves her emotions and actions flow like water. But the higher you fall - the higher the chance that the impact might kill you.
When it comes to the monster and Titan children at first she thought with her battle side. That whatever creatures had been spawned should be destroyed for the safety of her fellow demigods. But her mind immediately changed when she found she WAS part Titan. That her mother was a demititan. They were just like the demigods, with all their human likeness. Powerful but intelligent. She realized how much they had in common, how lonely they must feel after coming into this world and being judged for their parentage. Mari had only been here a couple days on her first visit before Tony vanished and she went on her voyage to look for him. So she never got the chance to actually meet or talk to any of the demigods, demititans or halfmonsters. An experience she's willing to try.
A few minor details that makes up the rest of Mari:
Outgoing:
Marina can be extremely outgoing if given the chance. But make sure to talk with her because silent responses start to make her nervous. And before you know it she's rambling on about a monkey in Quebec with three toes who owes her money. Or aka: she'll get totally off topic.
Loyal:
Above all else, Marina is loyal to her friends and family. You will never have to worry about her turning her back on you or switching sides for better benefits. But if she chides to trust you with her loyalty then she expects the same in return.
Courageous:
This girl could make the Nemean Lion look like a kitten. She would be willing to give her life for her friends. And though courage comes in many forms, there isn't one you couldn't compare her in.
History: "I guess I could tell you some bubble pop story that started with 'Once upon a time..' and had a huge plot about how the step mother was a cursed wench that blahblahblah to cinder-bella erh whatever. Then some how in the whole thing the wench dies and they end it with 'And they all lived happily ever after..'
I'm sorry to tell you this but not everyone has a happy ending, a prince charming, a fat fairy godmother in a dress or a castle to keep them hidden away from all the deception in the world. No. Instead we get weird dramatic deaths, ego crazed heroes, and the only fat "fairy" in a dress we see would be a one eyed dude chasing you down with silverware. Pretty spectacular right?
Instead I'll tell you my story from the beginning - I'll even throw in those four little words everyone loves so much...
Once Upon a Time..
Gemma fisher was an all around nice Human being. She had long blonde curly hair and a bright white smile that could immediately change anyone's attitude. Her life was simple, untouched by the horrors that lived beyond the mist. At the time she didn't actually believe in any type of Gods or Goddesses except one. Being a surfer most her life, she believed in the spirits of the sea. And the tales of Ocean gods of the past. Which in turn must have attracted Neptune to her. He'd sit on the beach of Oahu Hawaii, watching her ride the waves and teach others her wisdom. With each passing day he grew more fond of her. Little to both their knowledge, Gemma was a demititan. She was the daughter of the Titaness Eurybia who was the goddess of mastery over the seas. Of course neither of them new of this, and it wasn't found out until far later.
Gemma worked as a bartender at one of the local Hotel resorts by night and an aquatics teacher for tourists by day. On the evening of her twenty-first birthday, her younger twin sisters had decided it a good Idea to go night surfing despite the warnings expressed about tiger and sand sharks. Gemma knew about these warnings well enough to decline the offer. She knew that thoguh there weren't any great white sharks that didn't lower the danger rate by much. The local sharks weren't known for killing people but at times they could take a big enough chunk out of your side that bleeding out would do it for them. As her sisters were leaving she had a sudden change of heart, she didn't want her sisters out there on their own and offered to watch after them as long as they didn't go too far out. They quickly agreed of course and got their boards before running out to the beach. It was lucky of them to have a house right on the beach of North Shore for these types of reasons.
After hours and hours of surfing, Gemma found herself dozing off. She slept for maybe thirty minutes before the screaming started. Immediately she turned up right and searched for her sisters in the waves, she could barely see Catlyn trying to keep afloat on her surf board while searching for her twin. Without a second thought, Gemma grabbed her jetski and drove out to her sister. She had had more experience with water then the other two, and trained for her surfing. After Catlyn made her way onto he jetski, Gemma grabbed her harpoon gun and dived into the water. It took several times before she could see her sister Jane struggling far below. She took one last big breath before venturing down down down, her eyes focusing on the creature that had ahold of her. The sight of it was gruesome, it's head was that of a large sharks' but once you looked down it had the body of a man.
She didn't hesitate one bit though, and aimed her harpoon at the beast before shooting it straight through the heart. It gargled in pain and seemed to dissipate before the wound suddenly healed over. Gemma grabbed Jane by the arm and frantically swam toward the shore. But the beast was too quick, by the time they had gotten half way it was already on her tail, mouth open and ready to swallow them both whole. Just as it started to close it's jaws around them, a bright blue light filled the water like electricity- zapping the monsters flank as it made one last gurgle before turning to bubbles and clown fish. Gemma decided not to wait and see what had made the creature turn to bubbles, and hauled her sister onto the beach and far away from the ocean.
After a day or two of recuperation, Gemma finally convinced her sisters to tell her what they could remember. But their story seemed to be completely different then hers. What Jane had said was that a shark, a normal shark had grabbed ahold of her surf board and pulled her underwater by her leg strap. She remembered me diving into the water and shooting it with the harpoon and then them swimming to the shore like everything was fine. Gemma stared at the two dumbfounded for a long time, and tried to explain her version of the story. Only to be commented on her vast imagination and ability to make them laugh.
She didn't know what to make of their reactions, and instead blamed what she saw on adrenaline. The days passed and Gemma went back to her everyday life, going to work, getting the mail, paying the bills and surfing. But every now and then she would get distracted and see things she shouldn't normally see. Like when buying lunch at the groovy smoothie and the lady behind the counter suddenly looking like she had red eyes and scales and fire for hair. Freaky stuff. Gemma thought she might be going through shock from her adrenaline rush but her doctor told her she was perfectly fine. On the day before her day off she felt like she was ready To go home. She had served enough drinks and been called 'Baby' enough times that she tole the rest of the customers that if they did it again she'd triple their prices. It shut them up. By the end of the night, the bar had closed and the custodians were cleaning up. The only thing keeping her from going home was a man sitting in a booth in the back. He had his menu covering his face and no food at his table yet he had been sitting there all day. Each waitress that had come to his table had been turned away.
Irritated, Gemma grabbed someone's apron and a note pad off the counter. She normally was never a waitress, the boss had told her that though she had a nice personality- she was kind of scary to the annoying customers. And her ferocity fit better for a bartender. Once she reached the mans table she asked him what he'd like. There was a long pause before he set down his menu and revealed his face smiling. 'You. ' was his answer. Now normally on a night like this she would have slapped any man so hard across the face it'd wake up their dentist. But instead she just stood there and blinked. She felt like she knew him, like she wanted to know him. He gestured for her to sit and she plopped into the chair in a dazed like state. It took a bit of talking before she seemed to crawl out of that drool Mode, but she seemed to do it.
They talked all night until it was opening time once again the next day. He offered to buy her breakfast and before long they started dating. And soon enough:
BOOM!
she was pregnant. [/center]Neptune was thrilled at hearing the news; but he knew that he would have to tell her who he was. He tried to lay it down as gently as possible, but It made things harder to explain. After telling her everything her response shocked him. At first she was excepting and loving, she didn't care if he was a God or Osmosis Jones- she loved him. But her soft response quickly turned to livid fury. She Was furious that he wanted her to let some Wolf run off with their child. To put her in an arena and prove herself worthy enough to be taught? Was his soda laced with drugs or something? Cause he must have been high if he thought she was going to just give their baby away like a prize. Neptune tried to reason with her and not get angry but her words were starting to question his decision. His posture turned stiffer like he was a soldier, and his senses seemed more alert. His beautiful ocean colored eyes seemed to cloud over like the sea before a storm. The wind outside the house started to whip and whirl due to the sudden change in the waves. Stirring so much it sent surfers flying off balance like dominos.
Gemma started to notice the change and her anger quickly dissipated, abruptly jumping to her feet and kissing the God. It seemed to catch him off guard and his frigid stance quickly melted. Everything turning calm. He gave her his word that this decision was the safest for their baby and in turn she agreed to fill through. Neptune waited until after the baby girl was born before he left. He requested Gemma name her Marina to keep her remembering whose child she was. As soon as she was out of the womb she was immediately claimed, the beautiful trident flashing over her head.
The nurses didn't seem to notice it but what they had noticed were two birthmarks. The first was the trident as bright and colored as te claim had been - slightly like a tattoo but more life like. It lay under her right wrist. On her left wrist though was something different but similar, it was the ancient symbol of Eurybia. She had blessed her granddaughter. And claimed her in her own way. Neptune had been gone before he could see these markings and so Gemma thought the second just went along with the first.
She prepared Marina as much as she could right from the moment he could walk. Telling her works that she wanted to spend more time with her because her father was going to hold custody. She was loved and known so well by her work places that they provided her money and food since she didn't work. At the age of two, Mari had learned how to surf, write, read, and speak. She knew four other languages other then roman and English. And she knew how to wield a short sword half her size. Impossible you might say? Think again.
Two days after her birthday, Gemma got a letter in the mail box she had installed on one of her docks. It was only for use by Neptune so he could stay in touch one way or the other. She had noticed the slight change in how he wrote and what he said. He didn't seem as ready for battle as he did before. More... Greek. She remembered when he tried to explain the whole roman-Greek business. It just confused her. Gemma had Mari read her the letter, it stated that their home was attracting more and more monsters for some reason even though Marina wasn't old enough to be so strongly scented.
He told her it was time. And without even a blink or a second thought, she packed everything Mari would need. She was young but she understood that she wouldn't get to see her mother for a Long time or possibly ever. As night passed over the sky, Gemma took Mari out to the docks and loaded her into a boat that hadn't been there earlier that day. She gave her kisses and said her goodbyes as the nymphs appeared in the water. Promising to look after her baby as they sailed.
And then she was gone.
They docked in California where a faun by the French name of Philip met with her. He had a silly accent like someone had shoved a twizzler up his nostrils. He escorted an took care of Marina on her journey until they arrived at The Wolf House where she met Lupa. The wolf studied her for a long time as she tested her skills, and for a moment Mari could feel an essence of impressment. She took the girl to the Roman Encampement where she learned the heart of survival. To think on her feet, and use her brain as well as her body. Lupa didn't essentially approve of the surf board nor the longboard but Marina convinced her to see otherwise. Telling her of how it helped create balance and agility. Strength as well as speed and precise movements.
Being the only child of Neptune she had to be monitored constantly when she was still a pup. Having the knack to be curious and wander off if she had no need to pay attention. Being as most of the time she already knew it. Once she came of age, she was picked to join along side in the 2nd Legion lead by Tony Du Rone. She had known him a long time during camp and his disappearance had shocked her. She went to search for him but unfortunately it was in vain and now she has returned to stay at Half Blood Academy and help in anyway she can. [/I]
Abilities:
- Marina is half god and 1/4th Titan. So her abilities are a bit stronger then most seeing as both sides of her consist with the same element.
- Can make large earthquakes, this ability is often caused when she is in anger. She has a knack for toppling small cities- word to the wise: don't get her this angry.
- Control over all forms of Water - ocean water usually the most powerful.
- Can form water out of thin air with enough endurance and focus- though can weaken her quickly
- Concidering the large quantity of water residing in the body, can physically control another persons actions. The saying "stop hitting yourself" can come to mind..
- ADHD, which actually is heightened alertness that keeps half-bloods ready and alive for battle.
- Dyslexia, since her brain is hard-wired for reading Ancient Roman instead of modern languages.
- Clairvoyant dreams, causing her to watch events in distant locations as an out-of-body experience. This is a general feature of demigods, but becomes even more intense during times of strife and when events are in motion. Has an inherent knack for seeing otherwise hidden things thanks to his unpredictable, changeable nature, inherited from Poseidon.
- Upon contact with water (especially seawater), Gains a disproportionate amount of strength, combat skill, and speed-but only for a short time unless she is standing or immersed in water.
- Can control large volumes of water with great force (hydrokinesis). For example, she can redirect rivers, create currents to push boats or herself, or even increase surface tension to the point where it is firm enough to stand upon.
- Can breathe underwater. She is unharmed by water pressure of any amount, or by falling from great height into water.
- When underwater, she has the ability to stay completely dry unless consciously forcing herself to become wet. When she touches objects underwater, they become dry as well.
- Can create seawater with no effort with things that used to be in the sea
- Can communicate telepathically with sea animals, most of whom also obey her and treat her with respect.
- Can communicate with equine animals (horses, zebras, pegasi, etc.), as her father created them out of sea foam. They tend to treat her with some deference and work to accommodate her. Though can be extremely annoying with their persistence of calling her 'My Lady'.
- While at sea, has perfect bearings on her exact coordinates. (Longitude, Latitude, knots)
- Can telekinetically control all things that are connected with the sea (He has shown to be able to control boats).
- Can sense where objects are underwater.
- Can communicate with children of Poseidon, such as Cyclopes, underwater.
- Is very resistant to burning, and is even able to survive while immersed in magma for a short while because of the "power of the ocean" inside of her.
- Can release the oxygen diffused in water and force the surrounding water to recede, making an air bubble so her friends with non-hydrokinetic abilities can breathe.
- Can harden water (without freezing it) to form shields, and in the movie made a trident of hardened water. It is quite possible that she could use this skill to other purposes, combat or otherwise.
- Has a healing factor when standing or immersed in water, which is capable of mending serious wounds and curing her of poisoning. In the film Percy used this skill to heal other people as well as himself.
Weaknesses: Remember that your character is part human so weaknesses are necessary. They'll have to balance out your character's strengths. Go ahead. Make it more believable.
Other Information: Neptune gifted Marina with two beautiful imperial gold rings. That when turned a right will form into a four pointed spear, and when turned left will form into a doubled edged dagger. One ring has the power to set fire, while the other has the ability to freeze. Both have Neptunes symbol etched into the hilt.
