He knew he wasn't actually meant to be there. Anyone not a child of Hephaestus was seen as not fit to work with metal. Jacen wasn't good with metal, but he wasn't bad, he hoped. He'd never done this before.
Thankfully, most of his work was already done. He'd found two swords, thin ones. They were known as Tanto, a straight dagger that curved off to a point at the end. Perfect; it was imperative that the sword be straight along one edge anyway. They were but eighteen inches each.
He'd cut the blade from the hilts, then, and almost cut himself numerous times. Hmm... maybe he wouldn't actually have to heat metal up at all; he could construct without it. That was a relief; he'd built things in Technology classes before. It shouldn't be too hard.
Then, he'd taken a long staff made of something labeled 'Brazilian Blackheart'. It was a hard wood, but so light it almost fell out of his hand, the first time he'd swung it around. He'd carefully shaved it down, so that it was hollow two feet into the middle of both ends. It took time to do that. He tried not to rush it.
He'd then put the blades, minus the hilts, into the staff, and sawn the whole thing in half. He'd put a rattan middle in, all the more flexible to deal with, and made a bevel gear, and connected it to the swords. After having a resident Cyclops look it over, he went outside to try it out.
Perfect; the end result was perfect! Fully deployed, it looks like a naginata, but double sided. It was a four foot long staff, with foot long blades coming out of either end. Impressive, he thought.
The best part was, though, that he could simply twist the middle of it, and the blades would sink back into the staff. He could batter an enemy, or put the blades in for practice bouts. Wow... the only problem was, Jacen thought, there was no way he'd ever get a way to carry it easily; he wasn't going to travel with it in his hands, and it was a bit awkward to wear at his belt, for sure.
Huh. An odd dilemma. Then, a thought occurred to him; the blades themselves were only a foot and a half long each... and the staff was four feet long... he did the math in his head. He'd have a foot left over in the middle, the part with the gears. He made a telescoping effect on it, and was left with something that, when put on a sheath on his back, would be only three feet long. Getting the gears in where the blades were was tricky, but doable.
After making sure the edges would never go blunt, he sighed. Perfect! He was so happy. Finally, a weapon that fit his talents!
He went outside, then, to try it out.
