Dislikes: - Passing judgment - Snooty People - Trying to prove herself - Feeling abandoned - Limelight - Over the top characters - Bullies - Soap operas
Personality: Pensive: Mel’s normal in her own mind, but her mind tends to wander off in all directions. But not in the out of the ordinary, spacey way; she’s more of the contemplative type, so to speak. Though people often find her weird and borderline creepy, she doesn’t mind or bothers correcting them. She is a bit darker but she just has a lot to think about.
Potentially Obsessed: Once she finds something that catches her interest, she can become completely immersed in it. Fortunately, it doesn’t last long and is pretty temporary.
Mathematical/Musical Genius: Incredibly gifted in numbers, that is the one thing she excels naturally in. She can solve any equation or envision complex patterns because she can see geometric shapes on a 3D level. She can often be seen mumbling and scribbling difficult equations and intricate formulas wherever she is [mostly in the Apollo cabin, on the wall beside her bed]. In truth, that is actually her writing out prophecies, numerically. As for her musical talent, she just loves stringing together notes and creating melodies on her violin [Lady Aurora]. Her grandfather had taught her but she was just naturally gifted, being Apollo’s daughter. The sun god enchanted her violin as a gift, so she has the ability to summon his sacred animals by playing melodies that ‘sound’ like the pertaining creature.
Insecure: Although she may be brainy in the math area, she’s never really fit in to any crowd. Other geniuses would look down on her because she wasn’t as gifted in other areas as she was with math. The ‘cool’ people never accepted her because she was just too smart for them. So Mel got the worst of both worlds; she was just not smart enough for the nerds and was just too smart for the normal kids. This prompts her to stray away from large crowds and people in general.
That’s when she started talking to the voices in her head. She talks to wild animals or herself, despite not being able to ‘speak’ with most of them. She’ll imagine what they say and engage in ‘conversation’ that way, though it’s just her talking to herself.
Friendly: She’s a sweet girl once you get to know Mel. She’s polite and would never intentionally hurt anyone. Although she can be a bit weird/awkward, she means well and tries to be a good friend to those close to her. She can be just as fun and playful as her siblings. She’ll even indulge in a group prank if she’s talked into it. She does have her serious moments too.
Expert Marksman and Animal Whisperer: Because she doesn’t interact much, she has lots of time on her hands. She occasionally practices medicine but actually prefers to play target practice. Because she does so for hours, she’s one of the more talented archers of Apollo. Mel also tends to spend lots of time talking to wild animals, preferring their company over people.
Influenced: She can be easily influenced and manipulated because of her lack of interaction with people. So whatever people tell her, she’s more prone to believe it. She’s not stupid, just a bit on the naive side.
History: Marta Van Aerden was the single daughter of a Scottish Duke, Reginald Van Aerden. She was born and raised in Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Polite, graceful, refined, and beautiful, her hand was always sought out for matrimony. Marta, however, refused every one of her suitors, choosing to live her life unmarried, sparking the bitter and vengeful feelings of said suitors. Instead, she spent much of her time with political affairs, or personal activities she enjoys [such as horseback and fencing]. She wasn’t unhappy, but rather lonely. It wasn’t until she met Apollo during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world’s largest Art Festival, that she began to seriously consider marriage, and therefore a child of her own. She couldn’t help but be drawn to the sun god’s charming, charismatic personality, just as he took a fancy to her lady-like but virtuous character.
Marta received her wish; their daughter was conceived on New Years Eve on the night of the Hogmanay Festival. Apollo, once again finding out the truth about his child, told Marta of his true nature; of who he was and where to bring their daughter once she was old enough. Knowing he was different from the start, Marta willingly accepted the truth and promised Apollo to bring their daughter to Half Blood Academy once she was old enough. Apollo then took his leave and returned to Mt. Olympus.
Rumors then began to spread about Marta’s bastard child and of who the father could have been. Reginald did his best to silence the press, but it proved futile once Marta gave birth to her daughter, Mellia, so they both decided to make it official that she was a single mother. One of her previous suitors, Richard, was furious at the news that someone had fathered Marta’s child, for he had wanted to marry into one of Scotland’s most influential families and inherit their wealth. Now that she had a baby, that had sealed the deal. So Richard, who not only wanted the Aerdens’ wealth, but was also madly in love with Marta vowing that if he couldn’t have her, no one would, bypassed their security, snuck into their home, and murdered Marta in her sleep. He was about to do away with her daughter, when he beheld a bright light. The last thing that could be heard was Richard’s horrifying scream. There was nothing left of him.
Marta, on the verge of death, cuddled her daughter Mellia, kissed her forehead, and smiled up at Apollo, before her soul was laid to rest. Apollo took his daughter in his arms, just as Marta’s father arrived at the scene. Arrangements were made to raise Mellia in a more secluded lifestyle in case her life would be in danger. Apollo promised he would watch her progress and keep an eye on her. The Duke personally took care of Mellia as much as he could.
Mellia grew up a strange, quirky, but very sweet girl. She had a hard time with all her school subjects, except mathematics, due to her diagnosis of ADHD and dyslexia. She had tried a private school for a time but she never got along with the other children and was often seen scribbling a bunch of numbers on her desk or talking to herself, so she had personal tutors instead. She learned to play the violin which she found she was naturally gifted in. Her grandfather also taught her things her mother loved doing. Her life wasn’t totally bad, but she was often lonely without a mother figure or friends her age. Eventually, she began to find comfort in solitude. She knew she wasn’t normal, and that was confirmed a few weeks after she turned 12.
While out in the gardens, she was attacked by an empousa disguised as a maid who had been watching Mellia grow up all her life. Mellia didn’t know what else to do but run. A young man, hearing the commotion came to Mellia’s aid. Defeating the empousa, the man took ahold of Mellia’s hand and met with the Scottish Duke. There, Mellia learned everything. The man and Duke Reginald told her everything that happened up until the present day. The young man was her father, Apollo. How he met her mother, and what now needed to be done. Chet, a satyr who had been an aid to Duke Reginald and acting as a guardian for Mellia was to escort her to HBA. A hazy sun symbol materialized above Mellia at that moment indicating that she was claimed and recognized as a daughter of Apollo.
Mellia did not doubt any of what they said. But instead of leaving right away for CHB, she wanted to stay with her grandfather for several more years. Apollo agreed on the condition that Chet taught and trained her so that she can defend herself properly. Monsters occasionally attacked but she was able and ready every time.
Finally three years passed, so it was time for Mellia to head to the demigod camp. She promised to stay with her grandfather after each summer ended and the Duke wished her all the luck in the world. Mellia was escorted to HBA at age 15.
Abilities: - Physically, she isn't exactly a strong girl. But she is an excellent archer that rivals the skills of Artemis' huntresses. She's swift and lean, having often practiced on her own so much. She has a good hand in medicine as well.
- Mellia's enchanted violin is able to call forth any of Apollo's sacred creatures to use to her whim.
- Like other Apollo children, Mellia is a light manipulator, naturally gifted in the arts, can heal by singing, and mildly curse others.
Weaknesses:
- Mellia isn’t exactly timid but she is passive. Because of that, she will take whatever’s thrown at her and accept it. She always feels the need to appease others, disregarding her own feelings to do so.
- She lacks assertiveness and authority, but she’s never a follower, Rather a stray or a rogue, so she often tends to get lonely. Not only that, but her strange demeanor tends to drive people away, so she tries extremely hard to better herself.
- She holds kindness in high regard. If she’s treated well, she’ll believe anything anyone tells her. She’s sometimes taken advantage of, because of this.
